Seven sets the table for Kitchen Nightmares

Struggling restaurants get the TV spruce-up in a local version of the show first launched by Gordon Ramsay.

Seven has commissioned a season of Kitchen Nightmares from Eureka Productions.

Casting is underway at the moment for the first Australian adaptation of the 2004 Gordon Ramsay-hosted format.

“A renowned celebrity chef and restauranteur is on a mission to rescue struggling restaurants across Australia with a new series of Kitchen Nightmares, on Channel 7,” a casting notice announces.

“You will receive expert advice to revive your restaurant dreams, renew your passion and reinvigorate your menu.”

The series has been adapted in numerous countries but Ramsay, whose Hell’s Kitchen series was just renewed in the USA, has only presented in the UK and USA.

Seven is tipped to screen the series in Q4 this year, with three announced shows no longer expected this year: Australian Idol, Apartment Rules and Big Brother: VIP.

It also marks the third restaurant makeover show for the network following My Restaurant Rules and the failed Restaurant Revolution, plus apprentice series Kitchen Conviction. Nine also ventured with the genre in The Chopping Block and The Hot Plate.

It’s not clear which renowned celebrity has been hired for Kitchen Nightmares but filming will take place between April – July.

Restaurants must have been open for 1 year and offer dinner service, with applicants vaccinated.

“So, if your business is struggling, your staff’s appetite for success has faded or your food has lost its flavour, apply now.

“With our help, we could turn your restaurant into the hottest spot in town!”

  1. The big appeal of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares was him ripping into stubborn &/or inept restaurant owners & their staff, i can’t see anyone doing it the same way. And perhaps not being allowed to since things have changed in the better part of a decade since the original show aired (US version which finished in 2014). On the other hand Hell’s Kitchen is still going but somewhat of a different beast…

  2. A big drawcard with the original Kitchen Nightmares was Gordon Ramsay so they would need a very charismatic celebrity chef to make this work.

If I was to bring back this concept, I’d refresh and adapt it to include hotels, tourism operators, venues, resorts and other businesses. Maybe even revivals of entire village centres and small town centres. If Seven has the flexibility to go in that direction, maybe even with a host or with additional presenters that are skilled across hospitality and business marketing, that’s something I’d be interested in seeing.

  3. Well they need something for Gary and Matt to do, after Plate of Origin…yet another failed Seven food show. They wouldn’t have come cheap. Or should we expecting them on the “rebooted” MKR?

  4. You’d of thought Ch7 would of learnt their lesson by now?.. I can see the sizzle into being a big flop.

David- is there any confirmation as to why Aus Idol is not happening again / if it ever actually will? Thanks!
