“We came in to find out what happened with Neighbours.”

Seasoned boyband stars on Channel 5 lodge a protest at the network that cancelled Neighbours.

Boyzone’s Keith Duffy and Westlife’s Brian McFadden were on Channel 5 last week to promote their upcoming joint boyband tour ‘Boyzlife.’

But instead they opened with a protest at the station that has cancelled Neighbours.

McFadden said: “To tell you the truth, we’re not actually here to talk about the music, we came in to find out what happened with Neighbours. What is going on?

“We’re here on behalf of the Irish people who love Neighbours, to protest.”

Host Claudia-Liza Vanderpuije said, “To the boss of Channel 5, I did say to keep it quiet and they just completely disregarded (it).”

“Kylie Minogue… Natalie Imbruglia… Where’s the future singers from Australia gonna go now?” Duffy added.

  1. Yes and lets not forget that Neighbours has been axed before in the early days by 7 and came close several years ago so no one should write this show off yet.

  2. Not surprised about Brian’s view about Neighbours considering he was the girlfriend of one of the actresses who had a role in it – Delta Goodrem!

  3. Now this is just getting tiresome. Unless they intend to put their money where their mouths are by funding/producing the show themselves, their protestations are meaningless.

The cast/crew should count themselves lucky that the show has soldiered on for well over a decade with minimal financial contribution from the local broadcaster. It doesn’t appear that news of the show’s impending cancellation have been of any benefit to local viewership either.

The only other way I can see the show going on with minimal disruption is if they dump some of the regular cast. For all of the show’s money woes, one would think that the producers would be a little smarter and have fewer regulars than when the show was actually profitable.

    1. They’re entitled to a view, and to raise it on the channel concerned is fairly bold. But no, pop singer do not fund television. Australian numbers have remained steady on multichannel since the announce, including some days topping multis. If another UK channel comes to the rescue there may well be budget constraints that result in cast cuts. Strap yourself in, this will be an ongoing story in 2022 so I intend to cover many angles.

      1. I dont think they need to look at cast cuts but maybe back office staff should be culled. Or here’s a thought maybe they could go back to producing it as a TV show, not with a feature film mentality. How about going back to using a vision switcher who follows the directors script to “cut” the scenes as needed. Needing only 1 editor to put the show together, instead of the many they have now. I remember the production office used to have 3 or 4 people in it, how many now?? They employed a DOP when LDs were doing a fine job, they no longer have a TD on the show but rely on editors to maintain quality. Theres a reason why feature films cost so much to make, and the same process should not be applied to 5 nights a week strip drama.
