Friday Flashback: Harold strangles Paul

Back in 2005 Harold Bishop was so white with rage at Paul Robinson, he took matters into his own hands.

Back in 2005 Neighbours‘ Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) was so white with rage, blaming Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis) for the deaths of son David and family from a plane crash that he took matters into his own hands.

Do not attempt at home.

  1. And still to this day, no one in Ramsay Street have locked their front doors. The residents have had way too many unwanted guests in their homes.

  2. Memorable story arc, great era for the show, resurged to a new audience after the 2004 finale Lassiters fire. And that 2005 finale final scene was also memorable for being meticulously shot/edited, due to the heavily restrictive “G” rating, all you saw was Harold creep up and then suddenly the camera shaking from Paul’s POV and an extreme close-up of Harold’s face grunting and cut. Somewhat funny times actually. Same for Simpsons repeats at 6.

  3. Ah, the classic “G rated” strangulation cliffhanger. I watched these episodes live back in the day and have revisited them since.

Despite it all, it was quite creepy and well done, thanks to Smith’s performance. I thought the monologues were cheesy as hell, but that’s hardly his fault (I generally hate narrations). The face that he makes halfway through strangling Paul, showing both the extent of both his physical exertion and emotional distress is a moment I’ll never forget. Definitely a high point for Harold Bishop/Mr. Smith. I can’t help but wonder now if they had ever filmed a less “kid friendly” version of the scene.

And as cynical as their deaths were, they did viewers like me a solid back then by dumping the rest of the insufferable Bishop clan. Lil’s mum was a hoot though.
