Simpsons episode led by all-female creatives

A 33 season first for The Simpsons, barely a week after International Women's Day.

For the first time in 33 seasons, an episode of The Simpsons has been led by a team of female creatives.

Variety reports Episode 720 includes director Jennifer Moeller, assistant director Debbie Spafford, lead timer Esther Lee and background layout lead HeeJin Kim. The episode titled “You Won’t Believe What This Episode Is About — Act Three Will Shock You!” has a “written by” credit for Christine Nangle.

Previous episodes have featured female writer/director pairs, but this marks the first time it coincides with the lead animation creative team.

In the episode, Homer is blamed for leaving Santa’s Little Helper locked in the family car on a hot day. It’s actually not Homer’s fault, but footage of the incident is posted on a neighbourhood social media website (dubbed “NeighborHub”) and then goes viral.

An Australian broadcast date is yet to be announced.

  1. How does one get to view new episodes of The Simpsons here now? Was enjoying 7mate’s Wednesday animation night the last 4 years, but that seems to have changed now, with Disney Plus now having the rights. Wonder if 7flix will get them eventually, as they’ve said new episodes of Family Guy and American Dad will be coming?

    1. My guess is that Disney+ will retain first-run rights in Australia, while Seven will play “new” eps when licensing costs come down rather than (semi?) fast-tracking them like they used to (and paying a premium for multichannel fodder that rates about the same as repeats).

Curiously, Season 33 isn’t available on iTunes either, and my guess is that they will remain unavailable until after they air on 7mate/7flix. And Fox8 will likely be the last in the chain.

It would be nice if Seven would provide some clarity on the status of The Simpsons (et al.) on their network though.
