Vale: Shane Warne

Updated: Legendary Australian cricketer Shane Warne has died, aged 52.

Legendary Australian cricketer Shane Warne has died, aged 52.

Warne’s management released a brief statement overnight that he passed away in Koh Samui, Thailand, of a suspected heart attack.

“Shane was found unresponsive in his villa and despite the best efforts of medical staff, he could not be revived,” the statement reads.

“The family requests privacy at this time and will provide further details in due course.”

Warne is regarded as one of the finest cricketers in history, claiming 708 Test wickets at 25.41 in 145 matches between 1992 and 2007.

After his retirement, Warne served as a commentator and broadcaster for Nine variously between 2003 – 2018 and FOX Cricket from 2018 – 2022.

In 2010 he fronted his own talk show, Warnie, the last-ever show produced at GTV9 Richmond studios. But it failed to win over critics and audiences and was quickly axed. He appeared on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here on 10, at a whopping network price tag.

His private life was constantly the subject of media stories, especially around his marriage, break-up, dating, texting, smoking and endorsements for Advanced Hair Studios. But his cricketing brilliance made him feted by Australians.

A recent documentary on his career, Shane, was recently produced for Amazon Prime.

Warne was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2013, and was named one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Century, alongside Sir Donald Bradman, Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Jack Hobbs and Sir Vivian Richards.

His death came on the same day as fellow Australian cricket icon Rod Marsh, whom Warne paid tribute in a tweet earlier yesterday.

Brent Williams, Nine’s Director of Sport said,  “Today we have lost a sporting giant and a cricket immortal. Quite simply, Shane Warne changed the game forever. On the field he was a pioneer. In the commentary box he was a revolution. In life he was a force of nature whose engaging personality and sheer enthusiasm for life was infectious. At Nine we were privileged to witness his greatness on many fronts and we will forever cherish the memories. Our deepest condolences goes to Shane’s parents, brother, family and especially his children Jackson, Brooke and Summer. Warnie, you will always be a treasured member of the Wide World of Sports family and never forgotten. RIP mate.”

FOX Sports Executive Director Steve Crawley said: “He was The King, Warnie. He could teach you more about cricket in a half hour commentary stint than any coach could teach you in a lifetime. He was a wonderful mate. A beautiful person. A scallywag. We loved him and he loved us. We will miss Shane every day.”

Foxtel Group CEO Patrick Delany said: “Our nation has lost an icon in Shane Keith Warne. And for us at Foxtel and Kayo, the loss is heavy.

“Warnie was the favourite son of FOX Cricket. One of our family. A once in a lifetime genius of our national game, on and off the field. A larger-than-life personality with charisma to spare. A colleague, a mate.

“Today, the FOX Sports team are grieving at the news of Shane’s passing. Our condolences go out to his family and those closest to him. We have lost a giant. Rest in peace, Warnie.’

The Victorian Government has offered a state funeral.

  1. Very shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Shane Warne. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. RIP Warnie.

  2. What a star he was.I was always clued to the box when the Aussies were playing and seeing what Shame Warne was going to do.He wasn’t bad batman either achieving 99 runs in an innings so close to 100.When Shane retired i started to watch less Cricket and that’s the same today.I’m A Celebrity was great to watch has he tried to cope with his phobia of spiders he was shaking so much and the fear in his eyes.He would love to talk about his beloved Saints and was a special guest the odd time on the Footy Show over the years.Well Done to Sky News for there coverage last night of Warnie. When past players chatted about him and quite a few of them having a tear in there eye as it was still so raw.R.I.P Shane

  3. Woke up to this news bleary eyed, and, at first, I thought no I haven’t read this right and I am still waking up. Shocking and sad news. The definition of an honest and caring Australian larrikin, and a huge loss. I was only just watching him this week on Australian Story talking about the McGrath Foundation, and then the Celebrity Googleboxers reviewed the Shane doco on Amazon Prime.

  4. I am heartbroken and devastated by this shocking news. It just doesn’t seem real! I remember being coached by Warnie at a Little Legends Clinic back when I was eight years old (and bowling leg spin at the time!) and after the clinic, was so kind to give his time to us young kids, answering all the questions we had, taking as many photos as we liked with him and signing everything we wanted to him to sign. He will be greatly missed by all. Thoughts and prayers to his family, friends & former teammates. RIP Shane Warne

  5. What a shock. What a loss. Known of him since childhood. He is like family. After all these years, it was still great hearing Warne’s commentary of the cricket. Look after the people you love. Thanks, David for giving us the opportunity to express our condolences.

  6. It is incredible how quickly news departments in both TV and radio have put together memorial packages this morning. They deserve huge congratulations as they certainly wouldn’t have had this sitting on the shelf ready to go…

  7. This is such sad news and following Rod Marsh too. The Celebrity Goggleboxers were just talking about how great and fantastic he was on Wednesday night as well. Such a big loss and so sudden. Heart goes out to the kids and his family. RIP Warnie

  8. Devastating. I am in shock. I am not a fan of cricket but my Dad and husband are so his name and brilliance has been a topic in my home for over 30 years! RIP Shane.

    1. Kept doing similar with the News Headline, first thought nah this isn’t right maybe my Phone has cut-off a bit and it should be Shane Warne Dead Right, and then you open it and it goes on to talk about how Warne is correct about the reason problems in Australian Cricket. However nope it doesn’t happen and there isn’t a Blimp in the sky so I didn’t wake in an alternate reality this morning.

Which then makes it hit home even more, if that is how I’m seeing a person who only knew Warne from afar and not even really knew him, how must his Family feel. So as I say condolences to his Family and those who really knew him I mean it deeply and in a way I don’t think I’ve ever known in my 61 years on the planet.

      Vale Warnie
