ABC reviews presenter’s tweets

"The ABC is reviewing recent social media activity by presenter Fauziah Ibrahim," says broadcaster.

ABC presenter Fauziah Ibrahim was absent from her Weekend Breakfast co-host role on the weekend following news reports around controversial tweets.

An ABC News spokesperson told Guardian Australia: “The ABC is reviewing recent social media activity by presenter Fauziah Ibrahim, who has taken a break from on-camera duties but remains part of the Weekend Breakfast team.”

She was replaced by ABC’s John Barron.

The contentious issue is Ibrahim’s Twitter lists which included “Labor Trolls” and “Lobotomised Shitheads”. She has deleted the lists and made her Twitter account private.

She also withdrew references to ABC roles in her bio: “Journo via @YourMoneyAus, @AJENews, @AJ101East, @bbc ,
@cnbc. Eternal expat. Made in 🇸🇬. Opinions are my own.”

ABC Managing Director David Anderson has previously warned staff they face disciplinary action, including the sack, if they breach guidelines which bring the broadcaster into disrepute.

Anderson said journalists on Twitter are required to be “conscious of your responsibility to protect the ABC’s reputation, independence and integrity where your personal use of social media intersects with your professional life”.

“Working at the ABC offers tremendous opportunities,” he said. “It also comes with responsibilities – more than at any other media organisation in Australia.

“For employees, any breach of ABC policies, guidelines and procedures, including the ABC Code of Conduct and the Guidelines for Personal Use of Social Media, will be dealt with in accordance with the relevant ABC employment agreement and may lead to disciplinary action, including possible termination of employment.”

  1. I hope they sort this out swiftly. Fauziah and Jo are a great team and have terrific chemistry. As good as Dan Borcia and John Barron are, they are not a good fit for Weekend Breakfast. Fauziah is a rigorous interviewer but so too are most of ABC’ s stable of presenters, all wanting a gotcha moment with pollies of all persuasions.

  2. This would be a bit of a test for ABC to see the standards that are upheld for ABC staff that made controversial Tweets towards the other side of politics. The difference that is not in favour for Fauziah now is the introduction of the Guidelines for Personal Use of Social Media.

  3. Id’ be removing her from the role for not being very good at it, rather than a Twitter list to be honest. One of the worst interviewers on the ABC. Long winded questions, interrupting guests. I’m not a fan.

  4. All she did was list Twitter accounts that had been specifically set up to troll her for questioning Labour politicians in interviews, as it is her job to do. Pointless and stupid and since she attacked them for being ALP black ops, may get her into trouble. Of course if they’d been pro-Morrison trolls, the ABC would have lauded her and made her front page news instead of quietly burying her.

  5. Terminating her employment will make the situation 1000x worse for the ABC. There’ll be tit for tat left/right outrage about every social media post from every presenter.
