Tiny Oz: Apr 26

A six months recreation of Broome in the early 1900’s, during the peak of the pearling era.

This week on Tiny Oz, Jimmy Rees and JoAnne Bouzianis-Sellick look at Broome in the early 1900’s, during the peak of the pearling era.

Lachlan Fraser is an artist, carpenter, and keen miniature model maker from Broome. Born to Scottish parents, he’s lived in this far northern outpost of Western Australia for 40 years. He leads a group of local artisans in the build, that encompasses the main streets of the historic town.

The model will reflect the rich history of the town, its Indigenous heritage, the Pearling industry, and its multicultural community. Jimmy and JoAnne learn about Broome’s history, meeting the Aboriginal elders, Malays and Japanese whose stories have inspired the model.

Taking six months to create a 100% hand-hewn vision of Broome replete with buildings, luggers, trams, camels and a vibrant pearling workforce, Lachlan is ready to reveal the model to the people of Broome at a black tie and thongs affair.

Celebrating local artisans, regional history, and community ties, we experience Broome from a whole new perspective.

8:30pm Tuesday on ABC.
