Election 2022: viewing guide

All the anchors, panels and politics across ABC, Seven, Nine, 10 and SKY News this election.

Networks are live to air with Federal Election coverage on Saturday, and even on Sunday.

ABC, Seven, Nine, 10 and SKY News offer primetime panels -leaving SBS and multichannels as your safe harbour if politics is not your thang.

Here are your choices. See you on the other side.

ABC:

Primetime panel: Leigh Sales, Antony Green and David Speers will anchor the evening broadcast, joined by Annabel Crabb, Andrew Probyn, Laura Tingle, Labor’s Tanya Plibersek and Liberal Senator Simon Birmingham.

The all-day election coverage begins with Johanna Nicholson and Jeremy Fernandez on Weekend Breakfast at 7am (all times are AEST), followed by extended ABC News bulletins throughout the day from 11am to 4pm presented by Joe O’Brien and Karina Carvalho.

A national edition of ABC News on Election Day at 5pm will cross live around the country for the final word before polls close, presented by Jeremy Fernandez and Mary Gearin.

And from 6pm on Election Night, Leigh Sales, Antony Green and David Speers will spearhead our television election broadcast. They’ll be joined by Annabel Crabb, Andrew Probyn, Laura Tingle as well as Labor’s Tanya Plibersek and Liberal Senator Simon Birmingham.

Antony Green’s peerless analysis of the data will give audiences the most reliable and timely updates across the night and as they happen.

Insiders host David Speers will present a new segment with cutting edge graphics which will show audiences not just where the election is being won and lost, but the trends behind the result. Have coal-communities swung back to Labor, have seats with high levels of mortgage stress stuck with the government? David will answer those questions and more with the help of Vote Compass presenter Bridget Brennan, former Deputy State Director of the Victorian Liberal Party Tony Barry and the former Deputy Campaign Director for Labor in Victoria, Kosmos Samaras.

There will be ABC reporters spread from coast to coast in the battleground seats which will decide who forms the next government, and crosses to the key figures from the major and minor parties as the makeup of the 47th parliament starts to take shape. Greg Jennett and Patricia Karvelas will monitor the mood of the Liberal and Labor camps from their Sydney functions, and we’ll bring audiences the victory and concession speeches live as they happen.

On Sunday May 22, Weekend Breakfast will start at 6am to bring you up to date with all the latest, followed by the final 90-minute Insiders program of the 2022 Federal Election campaign, live from the ABC election centre in Ultimo.

David Speers will be joined by David Crowe (The Age & Sydney Morning Herald) Katharine Murphy (The Guardian) and Samantha Maiden (news.com.au) to break down the result for viewers – where it was won, where it was lost, or if it’s still in the balance, who is likely to form minority government.

Expect interviews with senior members of both the Liberal and Labor parties and a look back at the highs and lows of the campaign in an Insiders post-election montage.

If you’re out on the go, standing in line to vote or at an election night party you can stay in touch by live streaming coverage all day on ABC iview, and catchup on key moments and stories afterwards in our Australia Votes collection.

And on the ABC News website and app, a live blog will run throughout the day and into the night as votes are counted and results start coming in. Follow the blog for the latest results, expert analysis from the ABC’s election team and reporters around the country, and get involved by asking the ABC News team a question or leaving a comment.

  1. Just switched over to the ABC News from 2pm and there’s Joe and Karina standing like bloody statues behind a desk ,very untidy looking and I think unprofessional ,seems since Ita took over she has an agenda to set.Desks are for sitting at not standing.

  2. I will be watching the ABC because of Antony Green. Last election 7 & 9 were all over the place, that’s why I think ABC is the best. However if the Labor party wins it will be worth looking at the Sky mob for a few minutes.

  3. I don’t normally watch Seven’s election coverage but I might be thinking about streaming on iView, 9Now or 10Play. I will use the samsung TV to stream the election. However, I will also check out all the results through the news outlets.

  4. It always feel like a lot of overkill for every network to cover it. It used to be, that at least one ran a family favourite movie to provide a point of difference. For me, ABC and Sky – flipping between the two is manic enough. But reading Jonno’s comment, I might trade Sky for Ten, and just check in every now and again to Sky to see their blood pressure rise!

  5. As usual for me, it won’t be fixing to one particular network. It will be switching between the channels to get the gamut of panels and analysis. And you notice how each network has different seat counts and predictions throughout the evening and night until the result is reached.

    1. I went there in Canberra some years ago. The vibe was great, which was also aided by being in the national capital. From families to political fans, university students, professionals and known politicians coming in occasionally as well mingling with the crowds. It was possible to see the media personalities with all channels set up in the hall with the giant tally board. If you wanted to be interviewed or have your comments mentioned on TV, it was possible to do that with the media roaming around the room.

They said they ended it because the tallies moved online. Though it was very popular. I went to the last one, and no one knew at the time that it was going the final tally room event.

  6. For me it will be which ever has the most data, shows results for seats so far frequently, and don’t sit there talking and going on and on and on all night. Usually ends up a second screen on mute, so good informative graphics, data, etc is ideal.

  7. I will be watching mainly 10 and flicking over to the Anthony Green show. PVO is probably the best political editor and along with Waleed and Hugh make up the strongest Line-up. Will also flick to see 7 as they seem ok but Nine is the Weakest link, looking to promote their state newsreaders. Where is Samantha Maiden? she is awesome and should be first choice for any broadcast.

  8. I shall channel surf to see what grabs me and I’ll be treating myself to marinated chicken 🐓 wings for tea and Lolly Gobble Bliss Bombs 😬

  9. Thanks David, as I was wondering who would give the best coverage as I can’t stand Laura Tingle’s bias on the ABC. From that, it looks like 7 will be the most interesting, especially with the new tech!
