10 in joint dramas with UK’s Channel 5

Neighbours is ending, but 10 has three drama projects with Britain's Channel 5.

EXCLUSIVE:

Neighbours will wrap filming this Friday, ending an era of local drama for Network 10.

But the organisation has three future drama projects with UK’s Channel 5, the same network that announced it would shift its spend from funding Neighbours in favour of local content.

It follows Fremantle-produced Lie With Me created by Neighbours executive producer Jason Herbison drawing bumper ratings in the UK.

“We did Lie with Me, last year but there are three more, and they’re all being shot Australia,” said Network 10’s Senior Vice President, Programming and Content Daniel Monaghan (pictured).

“What they did with Lie with Me, and what their intention is to do is (dramas) set in Australia but with British characters. The lead in Lie with Me was a British actress from EastEnders. So that meant something to them because it was more of a hybrid.”

Beverley McGarvey Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, Paramount ANZ, added, “The investment they would make in a couple of series is nothing like the investment they would need to make in 260 episodes of Neighbours. So they will be spending more money on UK content. Their drama portfolio has dramatically increased with hits like All Creatures Great & Small.”

  1. Lie With Me/With Intent was awful. Has a 6.7 rating on IMDB and Ten sat on it for a few months until it wouldn’t hurt their ratings. It rated 3.5m in the UK (+7 total). Phoebe Roberts, who next appeared in Neighbours was clearly the best actor in the first episode (I didn’t watch past that). All Creatures Great and Small S1 rated 5m + 1m for the Sunday night repeat. S2 was a bit lower.
