Final-year journalism student Fraser Williams has been named the winner of the 2021 WIN News Scholarship, announced in Sydney last night at the Walkley Foundation’s 2022 Mid-Year Celebration of Journalism.

The Scholarship comprises a 12-week, full-time program in WIN News and a stipend of $10,000.

Williams is in his final year at Curtin University, studying a communications degree majoring in journalism and corporate screen production, completed internships and volunteered to write for many different outlets.

“From farmers doing it tough to the spiralling mental health crisis, Fraser had an immediate and thorough understanding of issues affecting regional communities,” WIN News National News Director Stella Lauri said.

“Fraser spoke from the heart during the final interview, saying reporting in regional areas has the ability to make significant change to not only a community, but to a state and indeed the nation. WIN News congratulates Fraser and is looking forward to him joining our ranks.”

As part of his scholarship Fraser will complete a minimum six-week period based at WIN News in Wollongong, with an option to complete the remaining six-week period at a WIN regional news centre on the Sunshine Coast, Hobart or Albury.

He will gain hands-on experience by accompanying journalists and camera operators out in the field. Under the guidance of the News Director, he will have the opportunity to source, write and voice reports, which will be broadcast in the 5.30pm WIN News bulletins.
