Billie McKay wins MasterChef Australia 2022

Billie McKay becomes the only person to win MasterChef Australia twice.

Season 7 winner Billie McKay has won the MasterChef Australia 2022, becoming the only person to win the series twice.

She took home the trophy and $250,000 by defeating Sarah Todd in a marathon cook-off.

Billie scored 58 / 70 points to Sarah’s 56 / 70 points.

The grand final took place over two rounds with both challenged to cook a dish that was both sweet and savoury in 75 minutes. Sarah’s chicken wings hit the brief, notable for their refinement and consideration in every element.

That left Sarah leading on 26 / 30 to Billie’s 21 / 30.

Fat Duck sensation Heston Blumenthal then entered the MasterChef kitchen to reveal his Taffety Tart – a 5 hr 15 minute challenge to replicate in flavour, texture and presentation.

Billie excelled in this round drawing 9s and 10s from the judges and edging ahead of Sarah Todd -of course there were two endings filmed by producers, meaning contestants would not have known the winner until broadcast.

Runner up Sarah was awarded $30,000 while third-placed Daniel was given $20,000.

The series caps off a season for 10 which started behind the competition but moved into pole position to finish on top.

10 has already called for registration for 2023 contestants.

  1. Just finished watching this series on UK TV. My husband agrees with me that the final at least seemed set up for Billie to win. In round 1 Sarah did much better with a well considered original dish, while Billie’s round 1 was hit and miss, with a big error she should have noticed while dressing her plate. There was definitely more than 5 points worth of ability between them but she was marked up, ready to excel in round 2 with her speciality, a dessert, to make. The task was set by a chef she’s worked for. Sarah was marked down, unfairly considering the marking in round 1. There was unfairness earlier in the series. The judges seem to make the criteria up as they go along, determined by who they want to win. The series was dragged out to 62 episodes! UK Masterchef is much fairer and briefer. It’s also more about cooking and less about theatre and ‘good TV’. I’m disappointed. Serves me right for watching it!

  2. The fact that Billie redid 3 of the elements on the final pressure test dish, 1 because she it didn’t quite look right and she realised she’d used the wrong sugar and 2 because they weren’t the exactly the same as Heston’s, the 3rd with around 10 minutes to go, got everything finished and plated up the dish without it looking slapped together was astonishing. But I hope they never do another fans v faves season again as my loyalties felt torn. Also, it would be nice to have a return of blind tastings and in service challenges having the diners, not just the judges vote on the winning dishes.
Also if they removed all the hibachis from the kitchen, took them to a paddock and blew them up in a type of Mythbusters experiment I would not be disappointed.

    1. Totally agree with you about Billie’s determination to get it right. She’s great. I don’t like previous contestants returning on any competition shows as I feel they are lucky to get the initial opportunity and they should make the most of it then move on. I’m sure the budget would extend to a couple of outdoor grills so the hibachis could be dispatched as you suggest.

      1. He might of had a foot injury, which either caused him to be totally wasted or under the effect of painkillers. Was not a good look for Ch10

  3. Billie’s final dish did seem to be better on appearance and she deserved to win. That’s great. And Heston is really one of the best chefs.

The one thing that I loathed was the disproportionate focus on Billie instead of an even focus on both Billie and Sarah. I don’t mind when the audience has favourites, but for the producers to have favourites, I find that very distasteful. It’s a problem in many competition shows that makes viewers tune out. It ruined an otherwise good show.

  4. Thoroughly enjoyed this season. Didn’t watch last year, but the new (to me) judges are great! Congratulations Billie on your win.

David, note you wrote “Sarah excelled…” where it should read Billie.
