Friday Flashback: Nominate Your Neighbour contest.

A clever viewer contest in 1986 to promote Neighbours saw Guy Pearce, Stefan Dennis, Peter O'Brien knocking on doors and handing out TV sets.

Rare footage!

When Neighbours moved from Seven to 10 in 1986 it rated in Melbourne, but struggled in Sydney.

Publicity boss Brian Walsh ran an inspired “Nominate Your Neighbour” competition in which prize winners saw stars such as Guy Pearce, Stefan Dennis, Peter O’Brien & Elaine Smith land on their doorstep to hand over TV sets!

The marketing worked. Neighbours became a hit going to to attract a 37 year legacy.

  1. It’s strange isn’t it, as during the later 2000s and even on Eleven, Neighbours actually consistently rated better in Sydney than Melbourne. And Home and Away was doing better in Melbourne than Sydney (and still is). Same for skews with Brisbane too. Go figure!
