Martin Freeman didn’t expect The Responder to return.

"I first read it as a standalone thing, with just five episodes," Martin Freeman says of UK police drama.

UK actor Martin Freeman will be returning in The Responder, but admits he hadn’t anticipated the police drama proceeding to further episodes.

“I didn’t [see it as a returning series], not necessarily,” he tells Radio Times. “But as we were doing it, I could see more of it.

“I first read it as a standalone thing, with just five episodes, but I enjoying the doing of it very much and obviously it’s been well-received.”

In March the series about urgent response officer Chris Carson battling his own mental health struggles was renewed for a second season.

“If anything, I’m too much of a fan of things being finite, you know? If it was up to me, we probably wouldn’t finish a single episode of anything – just three scenes and then stop before it goes bad!” he added.

The Responder screens in Australia on SBS.
