I’m not usually one for giving much attention to repeats, but tonight NITV will screen The Ghan: Australia’s Greatest Train Journey as a 3:10 hr marathon.
An Australian first, ‘The Ghan’ is an immersive journey on Australia’s most iconic railway that reveals – in real time – the stunning topographical vistas and dramatic palette changes from Adelaide to Darwin, while unpacking our Indigenous, multicultural and social history in the most surprising way.
The Ghan takes inspiration from the highly successful international concept of ‘slow tv’ and will be unlike anything else on Australian TV. Far from a travel show, this promises to be an experiential program for the audience, being transported in real time through the heart of this vast, arid land, and through the rich, surprising and diverse history revealed along the way.
The Ghan is the perfect vehicle for NITV audiences, combining the well-established love of railways with the rich visual story telling of Australia’s social, multicultural and Indigenous history. Far from being just a straight train journey, the film makers will use an innovative graphic treatment to bring to life the little-known multicultural stories that take place along The Ghan’s path.
Sunday, 17 July at 7.40pm on NITV.

If you can’t sleep then this is the mesmerizing, quiet train ride to watch if its the non verbal trip. Just the train and the scenery. Turn off all the lights and chill. I watched a lot of it really late one sleepless night and found it was relaxing.
