Shaun Micallef flags new host for Mad As Hell

Updated: "ABC and I are continuing to talk about evolving the show with someone else in the chair or maybe making different shows using our very talented cast and crew."

Shaun Micallef is in discussions with ABC for a new host to succeed him on Mad As Hell, confirming the upcoming 15th season will be his last as host.

His call, and very big shoes to fill…

In further tweets he said, “…the ABC and I are continuing to talk about evolving the show with someone else in the chair or maybe making different shows using our very talented cast and crew.”

He added, “After 11 years and 15 seasons, I just felt it was time for someone younger to take advantage of the resources and opportunities on offer.”

An ABC spokesperson told TV Blackbox, “Our audiences love Shaun, and the show. The ABC looks forward to continuing our creative relationship with Shaun.”

Micallef also premieres his new series Shaun Micallef’s Brain Eisteddfod on 10 on July 20, the same night as Mad as Hell returns with its new sheriff in town…

“We’re going to do all things we’ve NEVER been allowed to. Bloody ABC,” he teased.

“With conversations continuing about the future of the show, stay home Canberra, as Shaun, more than ever, will not miss you in this next season of Mad As Hell – whether you’re blue, red, green or teal.”

  1. Sad to see Shaun go from the show after this season (and 10 years doing the show deserves an applause). As Shaun pointed out in the tweets – he turns 60 next week. At least we get a farewell season and show for it which didn’t happen to Micallef Tonight when that got axed by 9.

  2. In terms of a new host, I can’t imagine an outsider would want to step in and do Shaun’s act. One of the cast would have to do it. Emily could do an impersonation that mocks Shaun absence. Or they could keep Mad as Hell going as a sketch comedy show with no host, but I fear the void would be too big.

  3. I like watching Mad As Hell. It’s a shame that it would appear that now there’s a Labor government that the show might struggle for content or a want to be critical through satire when it comes to holding a Labor government to account with comedy. Stick around Shaun with Air Bus Albo making waves it won’t take long for some really good content to hold the new government to account and make people laugh. Ending the show not long after a new Labor government gives off the balanced argument once again for ABC programs. Hope the show sticks around Shaun is loved by ABC viewers.

    1. ABC actually wants to keep the show running, but it is Shaun who has called time on hosting. The show started when Julia Gillard was PM, and has mocked both govt and opposition (albeit more former than the latter). I don’t recall any ACMA breaches about imbalance. Comedy always mocks the power.

    2. Robert82, I respectively disagree. MAH has not hesitated to torpedo Labor’s “ hapless small target don’t offend anyone” persona brilliantly. Not to mention their unique ability to lose the unloseable election. The idea that ABC comedy goes easy on Labor I guess has forgetten Hollowmen (supposedly based on Rudd). 10 years is a long time to be doing a show like this I am guessing. At least he goes out on his terms. And deservedly so.

  4. The cynics would say, it ends up that there is a new or different show that isn’t about politics now that Albanese is PM. We’ll see what happens.

  5. Will watching one season (this is a fair indication to me if the new host is good enough or not as you sometimes can’t tell after a few ep’s as he/she may still be settling into the role etc) to start with when Shaun leaves just to see what it will be like, if its no good then they have lost me for good as I love Shaun hosting it

  6. No! Ah, crap. It’s hard to see how the show would work without Shaun front & centre. But it has had an amazing run, no small thanks to the fellow cast and crew that has made this show brilliantly and consistently funny and sharp.
