UK returns to Big Brother with Live evictions

"Clever tasks, nail-biting nominations and live evictions will be back," in reimagined UK reality series.

Britain is reviving Big Brother after a 5 year break, for a “reimagined” series but with Live evictions and an audience vote throughout the series.

The show is moving to ITV2 and streaming platform ITVX after its last run on Channel 5 wrapped in 2018.

“A new cast of carefully selected housemates, from all walks of life, will take up residence in the world’s most famous reality TV home for up to six weeks, with cameras capturing their every move, and the nation following every twist and turn,” ITV announced.

“The action will all play out under the roof of the iconic Big Brother house, which will be given its own contemporary new look ready for this reimagining of the show. Clever tasks, nail-biting nominations and live evictions will be back, with the public once again playing a crucial role, voting throughout the series and ultimately determining the winner, who will walk away with a life changing cash prize.”

It isn’t yet clear which attributes the UK will pick up from existing BB brands, but Paul Mortimer, Director of Reality Commissioning & Acquisitions and Controller, ITV2, ITVBe and CITV said: “This refreshed, contemporary new series of Big Brother will contain all the familiar format points that kept viewers engaged and entertained the first time round, but with a brand new look and some additional twists that speak to today’s audience. We’re beyond excited to bring this iconic series to ITV2 and ITVX where it should especially engage with our younger viewers.”

In the UK, Big Brother first aired on Channel 4 and ran for a total of 11 series, plus 7 series of Celebrity Big Brother and a final special edition series entitled Ultimate Big Brother. The show subsequently aired for a further 8 series on Channel 5, with an additional 15 celebrity series, before going on hiatus in 2018.

Seven is yet to confirm its existing plans for more Big Brother in Australia, which did well in BVOD numbers.

  1. Welcome back Big Brother UK! This has been speculated for months and I’m so glad that the rumors came true! Can’t wait to watch! Hopefully we’ll be able to see it on some streaming platform over here in Australia…

  2. At only six weeks, it’ll be the shortest UK season by a long way. Hopefully Britbox or some one else will pick up the rights in Australia. I’ve watched every UK season since series 5, so am very much looking forward to this next year.

  3. Hope 7 are watching and make the same changes here for next season! Audience voting and live evictions are what made the soe a success originally!

    1. No – the Aussie version was pulled off screen after just 3 or 4 days – so perhaps the only credit it can take some credit for ensuring a UK revival isn’t a pre-recorded version done on the cheap.

This revival has been in discussions for the best part of a year though.

      1. Big Brother UK being revived has been talked about since it was first axed back in 2018. This has been going on even before Big Brother Australia came back. There are no clear link between them both. I think also with it going to ITV2 the budget compared to previous edition will be smaller as it isnt on a main channel. Also they will be looking at other editions through out the world to see why they rate or not rate and what has gone wrong or right.
