Janelle and Monzir win MKR 2022

Dating NSW couple take out $100,000 prize in marathon grand final of rebooted series.

NSW home cooks Janelle and Monzir have won MKR 2022.

The dating couple, of Turkish/Filipino and Sudanese heritage, defeated Queensland “fine diners” Kate and Mary for the title and a $100,000 prize.

The Grand Final consisted of the last two remaining teams cooking a 4 course degustation for 25 diners -a total of 100 plates in the Kitchen HQ.

Judges Manu Feildel, Colin Fassnidge and Curtis Stone scored Janelle and Monzir 27 / 30 points and Kate and Mary 25 / 30 points.

“We won, we actually won! It doesn’t matter where you came from, you can achieve anything you want. There is no limit. This means everything to us,” said Janelle.

Looking on as teams cooked were former contestants and families of the two final teams.

“Thank you, mum, for teaching me everything and thank you for your support,” Monzir said.

“We are proud of what we have achieved. I think we did the very best we could,” runner-up Kate added.

Seven’s rebooted series, produced by ITV Studios Australia, featured judges Nigella Lawson and Matt Preston, a condensed season and dispensed with ‘bitchiness’ which had become a hallmark of its instant restaurants. But it has also faced stiff competition from The Block and Hunted -however in Total TV viewing its numbers have risen above 900,000 national viewers.

Updated: Seven has announced casting for 2023.

  1. Do we know if this finale was filmed twice like in previous years? (to make sure no one found out in advance who won, hence ‘winners’ reactions being rather fake). I’ve watched a few eps here & there, didn’t really care who won tbh, i think i liked it more when it was bitchier lol.

  2. This very short season was almost a non event for me. There was no time to get to know the teams and decide who would be my favourite. Nigella appeared for only I think it was 4 episodes. Curtis “I’m On Every Show” Stone was a waste of time. The finalists Kate and Mary only cooked twice to get into the Grand Final. They need to get a new permanent partner for Manu. I think Matt Preston was good at the home restaurants. Congratulations to the youngsters that won. I was so looking forward to the return of MKR and am disappointed by this abbreviated offering.

  3. I liked that they listened to the audience and heard why they were tuning out. It helped. Not every show will listen to their audience. It’s a show that also relies on overseas sales, so that will help if it returns to overseas screens.

One thing with this series is that Nigella was promoted as the star of the show. When you were out in public and saw the advertising, it gave the impression of her as being the star for the whole season. I saw it that way. It’s the risk of disappointing the audience by not being as upfront as possible.

  4. Enjoyed the gf but I always enjoyed the challenges after the instant restaurants. But I guess with covid it may have been to hard.

Next year it would be nice to have Nigella back again
