The Lord of the Rings 25m global viewers at launch

The Rings of Power becomes the biggest premiere in the history of Prime Video.

Amazon has announced The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power attracted more than 25 million global viewers on its first day, making it the biggest premiere in the history of Prime Video.

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said: “It is somehow fitting that Tolkien’s stories – among the most popular of all time, and what many consider to be the true origin of the fantasy genre – have led us to this proud moment. I am so grateful to the Tolkien Estate – and to our showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, executive producer Lindsey Weber, cast and crew – for their tireless collaborative efforts and boundless creative energy. And it is the tens of millions of fans watching – clearly as passionate about Middle-earth as we are – who are our true measure of success.”

Specific numbers for territories including Australia have not been revealed. Amazon also did not specify how much of an episode a user needs to watch to count as a viewer.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is screening weekly through to its finale on October 14 on Prime Video.

  1. You would expect a reasonable number of curious viewers (especially in the USA) just to check out what all the fuss is about if nothing else, and Amazon Prime Video really needed a positive opening night result just to counter the numerous on line critics it has been fending off in recent months. Whatever Amazon’s plans are going forward this version of Lord of the Rings will be important especially regarding future TV drama productions and movie making, the purists who want writers and producers to stick to the original creative concepts featured in classic books and novels and also maintain some historical accuracy in their screenplays and dramas, will be examining every aspect of this expensively made production with interest and in detail.
I’m sure that numerous comparisons will also be made with GoT’s House of the Dragon which has definitely lifted its game.
