Cinematographer Matthew Farrell, who worked across such shows as MasterChef Australia, Rosehaven and The Amazing Race, has died, aged 42.
He died on September 19 when his plane crashed in the Upper Murray, NE Victoria, in his newly-bought Jabiru light aircraft late in the morning on his way to Wollongong to visit his fiancé’s father.
After he didn’t arrive on schedule at Wollongong, a search around bushland near Tallangatta found the plane wreckage in rugged country near Lucyvale on Monday. Police confirmed Mr Farrell was dead at the scene.
The veteran filmmaker and photographer had worked with the ABC, BBC, and Discovery Channel making several features, short films, commercials and documentaries, and had explored Antarctica, Patagonia and other locations in Asia.
His many credits as Cinematographer, Camera Operator, Stills Photgrapher, Camera Assistant and Colourist span MasterChef Australia, Rosehaven, The Amazing Race, Troppo, Aussie Lobster Men and Girl’s Guide to Hunting, Fishing & Wild Cooking.
An Australian Cinematographers Society spokesman in Tasmania said “Mat will be very fondly remembered by many … especially in the filmmaking and media industries, where he was greatly respected.
“Always good company, passionate and energetic member of the ACS, we shall miss him.
“So sad you’re gone but so glad you lived your life full of adventure and achieved so much in your 42 years.”
Last night The Amazing Race Australia dedicated its episode to his memory.
