“Would you like to be Magda Szubanski’s wife on network television?”

A call to play opposite Magda Szubanski proved irresistible to After the Verdict's Virginia Gay.

Virginia Gay couldn’t resist saying yes to a role on Nine drama After The Verdict, when she got a call from producers at Subtext Pictures.

“I did that job because they called and said, ‘Would you like to be Magda Szubanski’s wife on network television?’ I thought ‘Australia’s sweetheart, Magda Szubanski, who personally got us the Yes vote in marriage equality? Yes! It would be my honour,'” she tells TV Tonight.

“I’m very much supporting cast in that, but what an honour to support her in that, to feel like I was in her corner that whole time. ‘What do you need Magda, how can I help? What can we do?'”

Gay, who currently also has a key role in ABC drama Savage River, will also be seen in a new SBS drama in 2023.

“It’s called Safe Home, it’s just 4 episodes but absolutely incredible. Again, I’m a supporting player but very, very honoured to be a part of that incredible direction from a new director, Stevie Cruz-Martin (The Tailings, Pulse),” she continued.

“(Producer) Imogen Banks, who is a legend for a reason, has a new company Kindling is about finding new, young talent that needs some spark underneath it to get it to the next level.

“Stevie Cruz-Martin is one of those people who we are talking about in two or three year’s time.'”

Savage River screens 8:40pm Sunday on ABC.
After the Verdict concludes 8:40pm Wednesday on Nine.

  1. I love Virginia. She’s an excellent actress. Unfortunately the gulf between hers and that of Magda’s acting ability is immense. Magda has been awful in After The Verdict imo. She can’t carry the weight of the drama at all. But she’s not alone. Michelle Davidson has made the whole thing near unwatchable due to her neurotic, over the top style that I noted after Ep1. It hasn’t improved. The writing doesn’t help them much but that’s drawing a long bow.
Thankfully the rest of the cast have been solid which has carried me through somewhat. Tbh I just don’t think it’s a very good show.
