Back in 2010, FIFA awarded the 2018 & 2022 WC to Russia & Qatar respectively. The day after hearing the news, I told myself why FIFA would give the WC to Qatar. Qatar has never particpated in the World Cup before 2010. Why would they gve the WOrld Cup to Qatar is way beyond me. And as I thought in my head that Qatar is extremely hot with temps over 50 degrees.
The problem is that FIFA has been involved in corruption with many members being arrested and imprisoned. When I heard the news on the corruption scandal in 2015, I felt extremely disgusted about the news. Corruption and money laundering is killing sport.
After their corrupt awarding of World Cups to Russia and Qatar, the idea of FIFA suspending countries for improper governance is amusing. The Qatar bid involved an absurd commitment to build 20+ enclosed air-conditioned stadia so that the tournament wouldn’t disrupt North Hemisphere football. Which of course it now will, and cause many player injuries due to insane scheduling. Not going to be losing any sleep following this years tournament.
From what I am hearing, there are reports that Turnisia could be thrown out of the World Cup, which could cause chaos in Australia’s group. Something similiar happened with Euro 1992 when Yugoslavia was thrown out and replaced by Denmark just weeks out of the Euro that year (although the name Euro 1992 was applied retrospectively as it wasn’t known as Euro 1992 at the time) and ended up winning. If Turnisia is thrown out, who could replace them in our group (or if any team will be replaced at such short notice).
