Reggie Bird reveals heartbreaking health news

“It’s not what I wanted to hear. It’s the worst thing that you could have. I’m going to be deaf-blind," Big Brother winner reveals.

Much-loved Big Brother winner Reggie Bird has revealed she has been diagnosed with Usher’s Syndrome, a rare genetic disease which affects both hearing and vision.

Reggie, 48, is already legally blind but has received further medical advice.

“It’s not what I wanted to hear. It’s the worst thing that you could have. I’m going to be deaf-blind,” she told followers on social media.

But Reggie was putting on a brave face. “Life goes on. You’ve got to make the most of each day. I’m gonna have some fun. I’m gonna get fit again.”

Bird is already caring for two children, one of whom has cystic fibrosis.

She is the only Big Brother contestant to win the show twice.

Luv ya, Reg!

  1. Such horrible news for Reggie. Hasn’t she had to go through enough already?! But it’s reassuring to her of her positive attitude which I’m sure will get her through this. All the best Reggie.

  2. What a wonderful human being with such a scary future ahead. I’m so glad she won BB – truly the most deserving reality winner I’ve ever seen. She moves forward with all of Australia’s love behind her.

  3. oh this is awful news, some people are unfairly unlucky in this life & vice versa. So glad she won the last BB, apart from anything else, she will need that money to towards here care, and i hope there are good people in her life to look out for her. There needs to be more ability diverseness on TV too.

  4. Poor girl just can’t catch a break. I didn’t watch her last season of BB, but like many others, I loved her back in 2003, and she seems to be that same old down-to-Earth Reggie that charmed us all those years ago.

One of my former colleagues was also legally blind (with five kids!) and she was the absolute sweetest and I would affectionately refer to her as Super Mum. The parallels are almost eerie.

Wishing Reggie every bit of ease and happiness in this sometimes all-too-cruel life.

  5. Oh poor girl…more than her fair share….but Helen Keller did it….I don’t doubt for a moment that Reggie will also….she has such tenacity….
