Omar & Oz win The Block 2022

A record-breaking $5.6m sale and $1.58m profit on The Block -but there was high drama with homes passed in or selling to disappointing profits.

The Block auction is always a rollercoaster” -Scott Cam.

Best friends Omar & Oz have won The Block 2022 after their Gisborne house sold at auction for $5.666m, giving them a massive profit of $1.586m.

Adding their $100,000 prize they take home a record-breaking $1.66m amount in Block history.

But it was a day of high drama with other homes passed in or sold for much smaller profits.

Omar & ‘Oz’

Reserve: $4.08m
Sold: $5.666m
Profit: $1.586m

Rachel & Ryan

Reserve: $4.08m
Private Sale: $4.249m
Profit: $169k

Tom & Sarah-Jane

Reserve: 4.08m
Sold: $4.1m
Profit: $20k

Dylan & Jenny (passed in)

Reserve: 4.08m
Bid: $4.075m
Profit: $0k

Ankur & Sharon (passed in)

Reserve: 4.08m
Bid: 4.075m
Profit: $0k

It was indeed a rollercoaster auction, despite all homes having the same reserve of $4.08m.

After Omar & Oz took home a whopping $1.56m profit, the mood changed entirely for Tom & Sarah-Jane, who were given the privilege of auction order. Their auction stalled and resulted in a $20,000 profit leading to shocked faces, tears and hugs.

Rachel & Ryan’s auction was also stalling, with the couple deciding to pull the home from the auction. It sold to the highest bidder privately and secured them a $169,000 profit.

Ankur & Sharon were also forced to pull their home from sale in a nail-biting auction in which the auctioneer very nearly let it be sold just over its reserve, which would have resulted in a tiny profit. It will go to private sale this week.

The final auction was Dylan & Jenny which was tensely driven up to the reserve and was almost sold at another tiny profit. It was passed it and goes to private sale.

Oz said: “We’re absolutely stoked that we took out the win this year – we had a plan and stuck to it. It is a competition, but seeing each team come in after us and not getting the results that they wanted really hurt.”

Omar said: “It took a while to sink in, but it felt amazing to get a win after the hard work we put in. But it’s very hard seeing others obviously not doing so well.”

All three homes were bought by one Melbourne philanthropist. It’s not the first time homes have failed to sell on The Block, with houses passed in at Seasons 3, 4 and 13.

Host Scott Cam said: “It was a bittersweet day. We had one incredible high and some crushing lows for our Blockheads, who all worked the hardest I’ve ever seen to deliver these houses.

“As we’ve seen many times before, we’ll continue to negotiate with interested buyers to sell these homes, which are still on the market. I’m gunning for a positive result.”

Co-creator and Executive Producer, Julian Cress, said: “We’re in a very volatile real estate market and we’ve seen large and unexpected interest rate increases, including one just this week.

“While we had many registered bidders, clearly something has spooked the market. But we believe the properties are of incredible value and we think they will find new owners very soon, to deliver a well-deserved reward for our contestants’ hard work.”

  1. Very interesting the see what the Block delivers in 2023 in Hampton East. Clearly changes are required. Not so luxe and how they tackle Danny. He has money to spend so good for the producers and bean counters but not good for the entertainment.

  2. Totally agree re the agents, who would argue with and upset the one person in the room bidding, glad he didn’t then bid on those houses. Bad advertising for the agents as wouldn’t use them when that one kept asking for more bids after we’re told to pass it in, could have ended up with no prize money if somebody had bid another $5K even.

  3. I have never seen The Block, but from what I have seen from the couple of mentions from Gogglebox, they have had some bad luck during the show, so I think they definitely deserved to win, so well done to Omar and Oz.

  4. I would be very interested to know how much the show paid out for everything before you take out the advertising income and things like that. How much from buying the land, buying the old houses and transporting them to the site, to all the actual building and furnishing costs? I think the contestants get a weekly wage as well? Must have been a fortune? Well done to the boys !!

    1. The cost would be substantially lower than AFL or other sporting rights
They should have auctioned Scotties dwelling aswell, no pay for hosting the series but can take home the profit of sale.

  5. Danny has not helped this season, yes he bought three homes but after the first auction other bidders were scared off. Tom and SJ won the gnome on the back of Danny’s visit a few weeks back (saying it was the best home) and IMO no one wanted to go up against him when he bid for their home. Danny needs to go. He gets too much attention. He stops all other interested buyers from bidding.

As per @Sharpys comments, selling $2 million homes is probably a good idea. Make it more achievable to the average (Melbourne) buyer.

  6. Absolutely devastating for Tom and Sarah-Jane who IMO had the best house on the block.

The show needs a reset and go back to a more realistic level. Keep the luxe aspirational theme, but tone it down from $4M homes to maybe $2M.

    1. Agree, T & S-J had the only house where the beautiful old house was the highlight, they had the only finished landscaping, the quality of work was above the others. The only possible negative was that some would not like the plaid-style, but that is cosmetic and easily changed. Not enough of an issue to make $1.5M difference. Personally I loved their design taste.

I’ve loved nearly every episode this year (after several years off) except the auction one. These houses should all have gone to private treaty, but of course you can’t make a TV show from that.

    2. Their house was awful with that ridiculous tartan wallpaper in every room. It looked like one of my grandmother’s Scottish Highlands toffee wrappers. Their master bedroom was tiny. I could never understand why the judges loved the place.

  7. I live in Melton, so Gisborne isn’t far. It’s in the middle of nowhere, with few amenities or shopping centres. And really, apart from the first property selling because of its design and golf course, there was nothing special about the other properties. Add in high-interest rates, a volatile market and government instability, so no surprise really.

  8. Without commenting on the result, it was disappointing to see the rude behaviour displayed by one of the buyer’s agents. He obviously considers himself the star of the show (encouraged by channel 9) and now he is just annoying and obnoxious. Channel 9 now have a frankenstein situation, having created a monster who is ruining the auction shows.

      1. My bad. That makes it harder as they won’t want to discourage someone who might buy. It seems like there are no ordinary buyers anymore, just a cast of the regular bidders. They even brought them in during the construction to comment.

        1. I don’t think ordinary buyers have $4m-$5m lying around to even make a bid. I stopped watching The Block years ago due to the unrealistic budgets spent. Spending $200-$300k on a single room is what people would spend on an entire renovation. Yeah, the finishes and appliances look great, but it better be for the cost. Aspirational or dream home-like but could you see an ordinary person/couple/family paying off any of those houses in their lifetime?

          1. I’ve raised this in past interviews with producers, about whether the homes are now beyond the reach of Nine viewers. That’s fine if you’re making a Luxe Listings show, but not sure you can have it both ways.

      1. It seemed like the auctioneers didn’t know the reserves (although Tom and Sarah-Jane had told theirs) as they pushed toward a very small profit. Poor T & S-J were on too early and didn’t cotton on to the fact that passing it in was a much better option. The other three houses benefited from their experience.
