Renewed: The Sandman

"I will be bringing even more of The Sandman stories to life," says Neil Gaiman.

Fantasy series The Sandman, adapted from Neil Gaiman’s DC Comics series, has been renewed for a second season.

Netflix is calling the forthcoming installment “a continuation of The Sandman world” which will expand in the next episodes. Episode count and story details are still being kept under wraps.

The series stars Tom Sturridge plus Vivienne Acheampong, Patton Oswalt, Gwendoline Christie, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Kyo Ra, Boyd Holbrook, Jenna Coleman, and Mason Alexander.

“Millions upon millions of people have welcomed and watched and loved The Sandman on Netflix, from established Sandman fans to people who were simply curious, and then became obsessed with the Lord of Dreams, his family and their goings-on,” said Gaiman in a statement. “It gives me unbelievable pleasure to say that, working with Netflix and Warner Bros., Allan Heinberg, David Goyer and I will be bringing even more of The Sandman stories to life. There are some astonishing stories waiting for Morpheus and the rest of them (not to mention more members of the Endless Family to meet). Nobody is going to be happier about this than the Sandman cast and crew: they are the biggest Sandman fans there are. And now it’s time to get back to work. There’s a family meal ahead, after all. And Lucifer is waiting for Morpheus to return to Hell…”

  1. Happy about this. I’m a massive fan of the comics and I was hoping this would get renewed, cos there’s plenty more wonderful stories to tell.

I’ll keep this as spoiler-free as I can, but my hope for season 2 is that the next part of Joanna, Nada, Mad Hettie and Caliope’s full stories get told, that [redacted] and [redacted] get introduced, and that [redacted] will return. There’s a hint of that revisit in the first episode they appeared in. I’d love to see it done “properly” as it’s probably my favourite issue. I’m also hopeful for the true identity of “The Prodigal” is revealed. There’s another recurring character who has a minor part in what should be this new tranche of episodes, but I’m expecting that will be glossed over as they come back more significantly in even later issues. So, I guess you could say I’m hopeful but not holding my breath.
