Spidercam operator stood down after collision

FOX Sports issued an apology to South Africa after clocking Anrich Nortje at the MCG.

A spidercam operator who accidentally clocked South Africa’s Anrich Nortje at the MCG has been stood down.

Nortje was sent flying when the camera suspended by wires above the MCG turf did a low sweep from a height of about two metres about halfway to the boundary.

FOX Sports issued an apology to Nortje and the South African team after the incident.

Under agreed regulations between FOX, Cricket Australia and the ICC, Spidercam is not permitted to travel at less than 3.5 metres above the ground unless sitting stationary for on-field interviews with players.

Australian Cricketers Association chief executive Todd Greenberg said he had sought a ‘please explain’ from the broadcasters and CA.

“I have spoken to CA about that and to the broadcasters who I understand have formalised some things. Clearly, it’s an error that shouldn’t happen and won’t happen again.”

The Spidercam is operating again at a minimum height of four metres from the ground.
