The Australian version of Taskmaster, hosted by Tom Gleeson with Tom Cashman, will screen on 10 from early February.

Based on the UK series of the same name, this sees Julia Morris, Luke McGregor, Jimmy Rees, Nina Oyama and Danielle Walker facing infuriating challenges, battling it out for points to win.

  1. Taskmaster is one of my all time favourite shows. I’ll be cheering this series on to do well, unlike the usual bores that can be found on here wanting to vomit on comedic shows and/or any offering from Ch10 from a grand height.

The tough thing, as was the case of early days of the UK TM is finding its feet early and keeping the “sometimes” audience. Stay with it!

I’ve read from people who went to the filming of episodes and weren’t sure how it would go were pleasantly surprised.

  2. Curious where this goes – Nina Oyama and Danielle Walker are wild cards in the best possible way. Like McGregor could also excel at this wild format. Concerned that the bigger names including Tom will divert attention, the whole schtick of the original is Greg being shocked in delight then ruling. This promo promotes bigger names over those that will provide content. Cashman included ~ that role is a crux of this format and one he’s totally capable of.

  3. Sadly, from the photos and video on this page, it looks like everything from the original version will be copied. Taskmaster Tom will bully the cohost., the set is exactly the same, the same theme music, the same prize.

This will only appeal to Tom Gleeson fans, or those who have never seen the original (probably because it’s on an SBS station).

Julia Morris will drive away a huge number of viewers, but Luke McGregor may draw some others in.

    1. I’d wait and see. Ten’s version of Would I Lie To You looked like being a direct copy of the UK original – then they flipped the switch and took out all the funny bits! Total game changer! And they did it again with “Todd Sampson Presents: Brass Eye Australia” so, who knows – this might be something else altogether!

  4. Just waiting for 10 to do another “knock off” of The Masked Dancer and Romeo and Duets just to name a few. What ever happened to originality. Add another genre “Knock Off TV” to 10s line up and other FTA channels/streamers that do the same. That’s “entertainment” really?

  5. Seems like an interesting concept for a 30 minute, once a week show. The timeslot does suggest something at least an hour in length though which would be too padded out.

    1. The original UK version is typically 8-10 eps a season of hour long eps airing weekly (with the same cast being used for the whole season with a winner declared by the end of season).

I assume that it will be the same here, with the weekly eps airing on Thursdays.

      1. I was at the filming of one of the episodes and can confirm this is the case: 10 episodes airing weekly, each likely to be an hour in length. In short, the same format as the original show.

(That format was messed with for the I’ll-fated US adaptation and it seems like they’ve been careful to maintain it ever since.)

  6. I think Tom suits Hard Quiz quite well, and I have no qualms about watching Hard Quiz. It’s a great show. Though I like the preview in general, I don’t find him suited as host of Taskmaster with the shoutiness.

If they’re going to do British shows, like how they did WILTY, I think the hosts should be of similar style with similar wit. Like, Chrissie Swan is a great guest host on HYBPA?, but is a mismatch on WILTY for comedic style.

They could throw out the ideas to the press, perhaps TV Tonight and get feedback from viewers first. By the time they’ve announced it, it’s too late.

I’ll give Taskmaster Australia a chance because the preview is brief. Maybe the hosting might be okay, and it’s Ten’s best chance of not having a flop if it finds appeal.
