Australian Open down, but Nine takes the week.

Seven News was the top performer of the week, with Death in Paradise best in entertainment.

The return of the Australian Open has given Nine the 8th week of summer ratings.

Thursday night drew the biggest audience when Alex De Minaur v Adrian Mannarino and a marathon Thanasi Kokkinakis v Andy Murray matches were in play. Nine drew up to 522,000 metro viewers (for the De Minaur / Mannarino) game -however in shares it was Saturday night that was their best.

Last year Nine drew up to 886,000 in the first week for a Daniil Medevev / Nick Kyrgios match and a first week share of 34.0%. With less big names and a new breed of stars, this year Nine settled for 32.6%.

Seven News was the top performer of the week at 853,000 with Death in Paradise best in entertainment at 530,000.

7Bravo also launched a week ago and drew a modest 1.0% share as it begins to carve out an audience.

  1. It goes up some years, down others. Still won Nine the week and despite what News Corp mastheads, Seven or Ten Paramount identity-crisis say – they’d all love to have the rights to broadcast it. The momentum the Australian Open provides and time period (two weeks all day and all night) in which it provides it are of unparalleled benefit as the new ratings year kicks off.

  2. No surprise its down. Its been terrible coverage. Hosts that don’t know what they’re talking about, the commentators just love to talk during points and we’ve even had circumstances where they could pick any match and are showing the same match on both channels at the same time. Tennis Australia made a mistake renewing with Nine. They’re just no good at tennis. With that said though there are some highlights. Jelena Dokic always a pro and there has been some ripper matches but its let down by the broadcaster.

    1. On the contrary, I reckon the coverage has been excellent. When you add streaming on 9NOW and the viewing numbers on Stan Sport you will find the tennis ratings are not all that bad.

      1. Some of the non tennis hosts and personalities haven’t been as good as previous years

Also I think not having Mcinroe has hurt them a bit…also no Groth

    2. Commentary has nothing to do with it.

Ratings are down because there’s no Federer, no Barty, no Kyrgios, no Serena and Nadal gets knocked out early. All extremely popular and ratings juggernauts. You’re left with a host of younglings playing with Novak.

    3. If you’re a tennis fan like me it’s definitely worth paying for Stan Sport for the month – their coverage is excellent. 4k, no ads, highlights for 25mins or 5mins of every game – very enjoyable.

    1. Very true. The Tennis has been great and channel 9 doing a good job as normal.People just seem to be more interested in the best players in the world or the aussies.Been good to watch the up and coming players showing there craft and knocking out many of the top players been fun to watch

  3. Seven news is more consistently winning Sydney and Melbourne, and occasionally Brisbane to add to their traditional strengths of Adelaide and Perth. What was once a rare clean sweep is less rare now. Will be interesting to see if this trend holds but one would imagine nine somewhat nervous as the evening news is still usually the highest rating program. One would have expected Today to get something of a boost with the AO but week one doesn’t appear the case. AO still a great acquisition for Nine and it’s still very early days but nines news brands were once seemingly unbeatable.
