Airdate: Antidisturbios

A fictionalised look into the human tragedy of riot police and police brutality in Spain.

Spanish drama Antidisturbios screens late nights next week on SBS.

The series dramatises riot police and police brutality in Spain.

It has previously screened via SBS on Demand.

Six riot police officers carry out an eviction in downtown Madrid that goes horribly wrong, leaving one man dead at the end. An Internal Affairs team is put in charge of investigating the facts and the six riot policemen are accused of reckless homicide. The officers try to find a way out of the situation on their own, which ends up ripping them apart and making their situation even more complex. The only woman on the Internal Affairs group, Laia (Vicky Luengo), becomes obsessed with the case and ends up discovering that behind the botched eviction is a corrupt real-estate network that reaches up to the highest circles. Laia and the riot police become unlikely colleagues who together will risk it all to uncover a criminal conspiracy perpetrated in Madrid for many years.

Series One, Episode One:
A van with six riot police is sent to carry out a forced eviction in downtown Madrid. Normally, two or three units would be sent, but it is August and manpower is short, and they must go alone. The eviction is difficult and rough, but just when they think everything is under control, the youngest and most violent of the cops makes a bad decision, and a Senegalese immigrant falls from the second floor and dies a few hours later.

Tuesday, 31 January at 11.30pm on SBS.

One Response

  1. Having watched this series, Spanish domestic politics is quite a prominent feature of the story. With Europe’s current widespread influx of illegal immigrants, the EU’s dilemma with what to do with these people is causing consternation among indigenous Europeans in a number of countries. Sweden has also explored this subject in some of its recent drama series, including the rise of the political far right in the region, mostly due to racial differences. Overall Antidisturbios has its good points but maybe it offers a bit too much political melodrama for some. I rate this show as worth a look all the same.
