Shortland Street: “We are currently in discussions to find a new home”

Some hopeful news for fans of long-running New Zealand soap.

Shortland Street actor Michael Galvin has taken to social media to reassure Australian fans of the NZ soap, they are hunting for a new home.

“We just want to reassure you we are currently in discussions to find a new home for Shortland Street,” he said.

“We’ll update you with any information as soon as we have it.”

SBS VICELAND screens their final new episode today.

An SBS spokesperson told TV Tonight, “SBS VICELAND originally acquired 250 episodes of Shortland Street for the 2022 season, which only produced 240 episodes.

“As a result, we still had an extra 10 episodes to play out between 23rd Jan – 3rd Feb.

“Sadly, these will be the last episodes we air on VICELAND.”

  1. The other thing that few, including SBS have given little thought to….some folk like me have older TVs and have no real desire or financial budget to update or even want a smarty pants TV anymore than we want a smarty pants phone…but we do not get HD channels…I am able to watch on my very large 32″ PC screen…others dont have that….I use to also watch British soaps but like everything else they are on and off and moved around I lose interest…I have the attention span of a gnat or a toddler 😁 Use to be able to set you watch by what was on TV….only thing reliable and on time now, Peter Overton, 9News.

    1. I totally agree, and know where you are come from. My late father was the same, he brought a new TV when the analogue was switched off. He was happy using that, then it blew up and was advised repair would cost more than a new TV, so we all pitched in and bought him a new flat screen digital and he struggled to use it with all its bells and whistles. I’m just waiting for the day there won’t be any FTA or their apps and everybody will have to pay for their entertainment. It’s called progress apparently and is supposed to be good for us humans moving forward but that is entirely debatable to me.

      1. My older US chat friends pay for TV and also involves their phones?….one does well…one just does not watch TV….and the other cancelled all hers so no TV….she just watches things on the internet.

  2. I don’t watch this myself but having a NZ family member, their concern is this could end up back on Foxtel or a streaming service and viewers have to pay. Same as DOOLS, TYATR. This happened with UK soaps 2 where on FTA, then Foxtel now back on Seven Two. Musical chairs again.

    1. To be fair though, Once those 2 soaps were on Foxtel and Seven at the same time with the Foxtel broadcasts close to UK airdates and 7two years behind. 7two stopped airing them and started again but Foxtel has remained uninterrupted since they got them.

      1. I’m aware of this, back in the early 2000 Foxtel had Emmerdale, Coronation Street and Eastenders on UKTV and still do, but they were not in the “Essentials” package like they are now. They were in a different package you had to add on and “pay extra” for. I’ve had Foxtel since 1996. Seven had Corrie and Emmerdale mid morning at one stage (catch watching that many times) long be they moved to Seven Two as well so you’re preaching to the choir that was born a very very long time from yesterday.
