Seven gets Stranded on Honeymoon Island

Seven dives into reality format with newly matched couples marooned in their wedding attire on a deserted island.

As tipped last week, new reality format Stranded on Honeymoon Island is headed to Australia in 2024.

Seven has confirmed the new dating show from the creators of Married at First Sight. The series has delivered big ratings in Belgium, with other territory deals soon to be unveiled.

To be produced by Endemol Shine Australia, the company behind MAFS, the series sees couples matched by experts before being stranded on a deserted island in nothing but their wedding attire. Isolated and pitted against the forces of nature, can true love blossom and thrive or will surviving the elements push them apart?

ESA Chief Executive Officer, Peter Newman, said: “Stranded On Honeymoon Island is a bold, fresh and filmic new relationship experiment with a dramatic and instantly compelling opening. The inspired fusion of the most powerful elements of the survival and relationship genres has created a raw, honest and utterly absorbing take on the search for love that Australian audiences will find completely irresistible!”

Seven’s Chief Content Officer, Entertainment Programming, Angus Ross, said: “There is good reason broadcasters around the world have fallen in love with Stranded on Honeymoon Island and Seven is thrilled to bring this hot new series to Australian audiences.

“Snowman Productions and Endemol Shine Australia’s track record of success speaks for itself, and now they’re taking the reality dating genre to a whole new addictive level, blending fledgling love with the adventure of a lifetime. We have no doubt viewers will lap up every minute of this bold and exciting new format.”

Managing Director of Red Arrow Studios International, Tim Gerhatz, said: “Stranded on Honeymoon Island is really creating a sensation among broadcasters around the world and we are absolutely delighted that the Seven Network has snapped up the show for Australia so soon after its successful launch in Belgium. We are sure that Seven’s viewers will love its heady combination of real-life experience and exotic escapism.”

A production hub is expected to be set up in southeast Asia to facilitate the year-round filming of local versions of the series.

Seven has recently rejected the idea of “like for like” programming which leaves open the question of whether it intends to pit the show head to head against Nine’s MAFS, or indeed whether ESA would allow such a move.

  1. Is anyone asking for a combination of MAFS, Love Island and Survivor like this, or would they rather just watch those shows? We’ll see if this show dies after everyone tunes in for the curiosity factor (Holey Moley) or if it captures the nation’s attention and goes on to be a hit (MAFS). If you can’t beat them, just beg, borrow, steal, as the saying goes, and hope for the best.

  2. If it appeals to the participants being stranded on an island just leave them there to sort it out amongst themselves and save the viewers instead.

    1. I think is very true Seven is the copycat network and they have been doing it for years, I remember when Millionaire came out on Nine a few weeks later Seven had Million Dollar Chance Of Lifetime. Nowadays it seems to better known as the reject network picking up all the scraps the other networks don’t want ie out of date reality

      1. Don’t you remember Nine copying Seven’s cooking shows? Or Nine and Ten commissioning celebrity shows after Dancing with the Star’s success. They all do it, I don’t like it but some are more successful than others. Look at what Ten did with Survivor for example…

  3. So, like (as they say), this is MAFS on an island with “four couples matched by experts”. “we are already working on a stripped version”. (Red Arrow). All alone, except for that production team of 50 just there. Ugh. I notice Seven is trying to add some MAFS to Farmer Wants a Wife, albeit two seconds in a promo.

  4. So a bold, fresh, cinematic concept that is just MAFS crossed with Adam Seeks Eve, but in Morning Suits instead of Birthday Suits which is a small mercy. If you can’t beat ’em acquire the IP for something, or several things, similar and equally bad.

  5. Seven has been trying so many dating shows over the years to try & get a hit like MAFS. How many ex MAFS contestants will be racing to get another 15 mins on this.
Seven has always been the copycat network & this is no different. If you can’t beat them lets get a close enough version.
Will this push Idol out of the schedule next year?

      1. Yes. Since it went to 7 there seems to be increased drama all while trumpeting the many relationships/marriages/children from the show, albeit in the 9 years.

  6. ESA and production companies can’t dictate when the content airs can they? Surely that decision is up to the broadcaster paying them for the show

    1. Depends on the contract I guess. Harpo dictated that Oprah and Dr Phil could not be aired at the same time if they were on different channels, which of course didn’t apply in Australia.

      1. Interesting… also do we know if Million Dollar Island is still coming? Maybe that Island could double as a honeymoon destination too if there’s no asbestos anymore
