Airdate: Barry Humphries: A Life of Laughs

Liz Hayes hosts a retrospective special on comedy legend on Nine.

On Wednesday Liz Hayes hosts a special Barry Humphries : A Life of Laughs on Nine.

From his ordinary upbringing in Melbourne suburbia to the mid-1950s debut of the “impenetrable tour de force” Dame Edna Everage, Hayes remembers the career of the legend that spanned 70 years up until his death last week at the age of 89.

Barry Humphries wasn’t just a great comedian, he was also a marketing genius who effortlessly sold his characters in every single interview.

Delving into Humphries’ personal archive and using rare footage and clips that stamped his entire career, Hayes explores the unique wit and staying power of a performer without peer.

Sharing personal anecdotes and marvellous memories of interviewing Humphries, Hayes recalls the unpredictability he cleverly used in every incarnation.

“Reporters, like me who interviewed him never knew what we were going to get,” Hayes says. “But I can assure you that as you will see, Barry never let us down.”

8.30pm Wednesday on Nine.

  1. You don’t need to wait for Channel 9 to air a special on the late Barry Humphries.

Go to “youtube” and search for Barry Humphries. You will find an abundance of interviews with Michael Parkinson and Mike Willesee (RIP) to name a few.

You will also see videos of his performances in London and a rare program on one of Barry’s character Sandy Stone, produced by the ABC in the 1980s.

    Thank you

    1. YouTube is a great source for anything really and now there will probably more networks trying to get in on the action now the PM has told Piers Morgan there will be a joint state funeral for Barry.

  2. I hope they include excerpts from The Man Inside Dame Edna with the Golden Goanna award, that unique obstetrics gloves he got his sister to knit and my favourite besides the glorious gowns the single breasted hat with a fly. Only he could come up with that glove and hat concept. He was unique in every way and there will never be anyone who comes even close to the person he was. He was the very definition of “one of a kind” and that is what made him so appealing to me.
