Updated:

Three days after announcing SWAT would end CBS has now confirmed a seventh and final season of 13 episodes.

“We have listened to our viewers and their outpouring of passion for SWAT and we have reached an agreement to renew it for a final season of 13 episodes to air during the 2023-2024 broadcast year,” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach and Sony Pictures TV Studios president Katherine Pope said in a joint statement. “SWAT has aired for six seasons on CBS and garnered a devoted following. We are pleased that we found a way to bring it back and give closure to the show’s storylines and characters, which audiences deserve. Once again, we appreciate the talents and efforts of the cast, writers, producers and crew and everyone who has contributed to the success of SWAT. We look forward to its return next season.”

US police drama SWAT has been axed after six seasons.

The series starred Shemar Moore as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, Rochelle Aytes as Hondo’s girlfriend Nichelle, Jay Harrington as David “Deacon” Kay, Kenny Johnson as Dominique Luca, David Lim as Victor Tan, and Aussie Alex Russell as Jim Street.

“For six seasons, the amazing talents of the SWAT cast led by Shemar Moore, the writers, producers and crew guided by Executive Producers Shawn Ryan, Andy Dettman and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas brought us compelling, action packed episodes that also addressed important social issues and contributed to the success of our primetime line up,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “We sincerely thank them for their incredible work and passion and also thank our dedicated fans who tuned in every week.”

Deadline suggests CBS and Sony TV could not come to a financial agreement, with early renewals in the last few years keeping the license fee unchanged, which had further squeezed the show’s profit margins as costs increased.

Sony was reportedly not willing to go for another renewal at a flat license fee and finding a new home elsewhere appears unfeasible.

The Season 6 finale, titled “Legacy,” will air in the US within two weeks.

The series has screened in Australia on Seven and FOX One.

  1. Sony have probably made the right business choice, and they do have a number of new drama series coming in 2023, SWAT could be said to be at the end of its economic life if the production budget keeps going up. CBS are obviously still looking to save themselves money.
