Coffee break drama on The Block

Locals were enjoying free coffees from The Block, until one complaint ended the party.

Neighbours of The Block, currently underway in Hampton East, are no longer being treated to free coffees after the show’s adjacent McCafe was reportedly halted from handing them out to locals.

The branded cafe, which each season is installed to feed crew and promote take away products, is this year located on the verandah of a home being used as a production base in Charming Street.

Umbrellas and tables have been erected for tradies as they sip their coffees and down the odd McMuffin.

But while selling coffees would entail a council permit, Daily Mail reports one local was unhappy with a precedent this could set for commercial enterprises to sidestep permits in residential zones.

Since then, the locals are no longer getting free coffees and McCafe is sticking to Block staff only.

“It was a great meeting point to not only catch up with other neighbours, but to talk to the workers and find out what was happening with The Block,” one neighbour said.

“So someone has ruined it for us all. That’s a real shame.”

Sounds like a possible storyline if someone got it all on camera. What say you, Scott Cam?

  1. Bring back the free coffees for the neighbours. If they have to put up with all of the noise, traffic, TV crews, and everything else that goes into the production of The Block, then they should get something in return for their trouble. In fact, why not go farther and give away free burgers and chips as well?

  2. I’m a bit confused as to why McDonalds would go to the trouble and expense of setting up a coffee van and give stuff away for free. Do branded cups appear on episodes of the show? What’s in it for Macca’s?
Also, given The Block must work painstakingly with the Council regarding the complexity of getting building/road closure permits, etc, how hard would it be to get a permit to sell coffee from a van, especially since Charming St is virtually closed to traffic?
A nice post, David, but it sounds odd to me.

    1. And there in lies the answer…”The Golden M” gets free advertising to keep the neighbourhood and public on their side, but unfortunately the old saying is true …”there has to be at least one idiot in the village”…who like to stir the pot.
