iview hits driving more younger viewers for ABC

Aunty Donna's Coffee Cafe and Fisk are helping ABC to attract viewers under 30, even if they are largely on iview.

Aunty Donna’s Coffee Cafe may not necessarily be attracting broad crowds in overnight ratings but according to ABC it is drawing more younger viewers to iview, where all six episodes were available at launch.

Speaking at Screen Forever, ABC Head of Comedy Todd Abbott was asked about recent successful shows for audiences under the age of 30.

“I don’t think it’s any secret that broadcast audiences generally are not heavily made up of Under 30s, but that’s obviously one of the reasons that we are really focused on ABC iView and really trying to populate that,” he said.

“The things that have worked for that audience for us recently, obviously Aunty Donna which is on at the moment, is really resonating with that sector of the audience, which is exciting and exactly what we wanted it to do. Also, that’s because they’ve got a really impressive social media presence of their own. They are very heavily involved in a sort of a multi-pronged approach (including with TikTok).

“Interestingly, our biggest hit in the last two years Fisk, was the was the number one rating, scripted show -drama or comedy- across all the broadcast services in Australia, which is staggering.

“It actually hit with every demo. It’s not a show that you would immediately think of as being …for under 30s. But they made up a pretty significant part of that audience – as did every other demo.”

ABC also noted dramas such as The Newsreader, Savage River, Mystery Road: Origin is attracting viewers 35+ on iview.

  1. It doesn’t matter to the ABC where they get viewers, and they prefer online because they want viewers 13-50.
Their last plan involved cutting entertainment to increase funding to the staff, iView and their website. Their current plan will likely be more of the same. And they will probably copy the BBC in dealing with a decline in AM, FM and DAB listeners by putting more money into content for their Listen App.
