“We’ve had enough of the racism”: NITV quits Twitter

"We've had enough of the racism and hate that we see and experience every day on this platform."

NITV has suspended its official Twitter account telling its 58,000 followers, “We’ve had enough of the racism and hate that we see and experience every day on this platform.”

The NITV account last sparingly tweeted in March with posts attracting 5 or less replies.

But the decision to cease tweeting follows from ABC’s Stan Grant stepping aside from Q+A following online racial abuse.

NITV talent also hold accounts including Karla Grant, John Paul Janke, Natalie Ahmat, Rachael Knowles, Lowanna Grant, Breanna Holden, Kerri Ritchie, plus execs including Tanya Denning Orman, Rhanna Collins and more.

@SBSNews will continue to share First Nations stories and NITV will continue on Instagram & Facebook.

  1. Every time the subject of racism on social media or the internet comes up it makes me sad that people are subjected to it, and I often contemplate how much easier life was without the thumbs up or down. People never used to have that outlet to indulge their grievances on. There were other ways of giving feedback and people interacting with the tv stations and their shows. I believe the social media companies and those who abuse the use of them have a lot to answer for. I won’t give feedback or interact with anyone on them who is abusive, spiteful, disrespectful or vindictive in fact I rarely post anything on them, nor do I give reviews or feedback. As for tv stations or their shows it’s not up to me let them know how well they may or may not be doing I believe it’s up to them to take care of. Before the trend of “feedback” you placed a complaint or gave a positive response it was that simple IMO however I do have an opinion and I will comment if I feel inclined just like now.

  2. … about time some sense was shown … the ABC forced its on-air staff to sign up to Twitter when Mark Scott was MD (I was one of them) and the television news reporters had to have their username shown on the news every day along with the commercial Twitter logo … disgusting abuse of privacy …

    1. Their official ABC Twitter accounts were supposed to be used to promote the ABC content. What they used them for was partisan ad hominem attacks and when the defamation payouts got too expensive the ABC severely restricted them. I only lasted a few months on Twitter. You don’t have to wade into the swamp and that seems a better option than letting it win. NITV hasn’t been using Twitter for months, and it 58,000 followers haven’t been following it, so they aren’t giving up anything. They are just seizing the moment to pile in on political attack on Musk and the internet. The ABC of course has pinpointed the cause it’s all because News and Nine Entertainment have the temerity to point out the ABC’s self-serving agenda.

      1. I’m not seeing any evidence of anti-Musk from NITV, so that looks to be your reading of this. NITV was mulling the move before Stan Grant but has brought it forward, and the Referendum is actually increasing social media attacks according to the broadcaster.

  3. I thought that the TV show discussions were way better when they were on their own websites with moderated content. Social media came about and the media focused more on that instead of the core audiences. But the quality of discussion had dropped because of the style or culture of the particular social media network.

The issues with Twitter aren’t new and had been going on well before Elon took over, with other shows like Rage having ditched Twitter a while ago, because of the toxic effect Twitter was having.

I think it’s important for viewers to give feedback and interact with their favourite shows. It benefits both the viewers and shows. I think they could think about hosting moderated forums and discussions on the network’s or show’s own websites. It worked well in the past.

    1. The only question I would pose is that since these issues of racism had been happening for years on social media like Facebook, with the various groups and pages that could be followed, why wasn’t anything done earlier?

People will be cynical and think it’s political, just because of Elon. Just like how Q+A expressed getting rid of Twitter comments only now that Elon has taken over.
