Health update on Rex Hunt as he battles depression

Former AFL player and broadcaster has entered an institution to deal with mental health, says friend Sam Newman.

Former AFL player and broadcaster Rex Hunt is “not in a good way” and entered an institution for care, according to friend Sam Newman.

In his podcast You Cannot Be Serious, Newman said the 74-year-old, who battles bipolar depression, had gone into decline.

“I will give you a Rex update … I’m just telling you this seriously … he has since gone into a decline and he is currently under the care of an institution,” Newman said.

“And he is not going too well …

“Rex has gone into a decline, into a state of depression again, and we’re wishing him well.

“He has a lot to offer. He is a world class and world-renowned fisherman …

“People love him and want the best for him.

“He is a very dear friend and we hope he is back up and going soon.”

In May, the Herald Sun revealed Hunt suffered a mental health crisis in January, spending seven weeks in the Victoria Clinic in Prahran.

Last month he appeared at the Venetto Club in Bulleen at a dinner which raised awareness about men’s mental health issues.

Hunt hosted Sunday morning AFL panel shows on the Seven Network, the Sportsworld footy panel, I’m Rex Hunt and You’re Not plus fishing shows Rex Hunt’s Fishing World, and 10’s Angling Action.
