Ian Smith rallies to save local post office

Neighbours legend, sporting a king-size bruise, was out in force with locals to save a 136 year old Post Office.

Neighbours legend Ian Smith was one of several hundred locals protesting yesterday against plans to shut down a post office in Glenroy after 136 years.

Smith, best known as ‘Harold Bishop’ was sporting a king-size bruise on his cheek but lost none of his fire as he told Nine News the decision to permanently close the branch in three weeks was “so wrong”.

Many senior protesters argued the post office should stay open as Glenroy has a high population of people who do not use the internet, speak a language other than English, and were over the age of 80.

An online petition has gained almost 2300 signatures.

Mitcham branch in Melbourne’s east will also close next week, while Hampton’s post office shut its doors in April.

Smith is due to return to Neighbours in a guest role as part of its revival on 10 / Prime Video.

  1. It’s 2023, the internet has been mainstream for over two decades (at least!)… some ownership to acquiring new skills needs to be had by individuals.

If it’s a matter of ‘trust’, I’m sure things have gone wrong with paper and analog too….

  2. We need more Ian’s to fight and stand up to the banks and the post offices…in my area 2 banks and 1 post office have closed in the past few months…there is no thought or consideration for the people who rely on these essential services especially the elderly because not everyone is tech savvy…no consideration to the amount of time and extra expense travelling to use these services…like all big institutions money comes first and foremost…then they have the audacity to advise the large financial profits they’ve made…Shame on them I say…Go Ian👍

  3. All of our local bank branches closed except for Bendigo. Told by Westpac, ANZ etc. “can bank at the Post Office”. The PO closed then a privately owned PO opened, which gives better service than the government-owned PO ever did.

  4. That is not far from me. It’s a shame they are closing so many banks and post offices when people (and businesses) need them. There needs to be a rethink. Great to see Ian there. That looks like a nasty bruise on his face. I hope he’s okay.
