Karl Stefanovic, Sarah Abo score first win over Natalie Barr, Matt Shirvington.

There was another ratings victory made yesterday, buried deep in the numbers.

Amid all the hurrah for the Matildas, the Today show managed a quiet victory yesterday, overtaking Sunrise in the metro markets.

It marks the first win by Nine since Seven refreshed its show with new co-host Matt Shirvington and a brand new studio.

Today drew 195,000 metro viewers to Sunrise‘s 193,000 – a razor thin edge but a win nonetheless.

It comes despite Seven’s halo effect from the Matildas with Sunrise yesterday, even broadcasting from Tumbalong Park bursting with Matildas fever.

It was also the day David Koch made a reappearance talking finance. Ouch.

Sunrise still won nationally and every other day in sight, but Nine will surely be upbeat.

  1. I mainly watch Today but cross over to Sunrise sometimes. I like Today and it rates well in the east coast and always has, it just needs to pick up in Adelaide and Perth. I’m enjoying Today more than Sunrise now, Today feels more natural and warm and it flows more like a national morning show should.

  2. Never watched Today much…..but I watched Sarah on SBS and I really like her….also feel she is the best match for Karl yet…very easy fit for them both…💛

  3. The show has been all the better for having Sarah on the show. Her & Karl & all of the team have great chemistry. You can tell that they all genuinely like each other.

  4. Ratings measurement for breakfast TV baffles me somewhat. It’s basically the same 20-minutes of content on repeat for the duration of the show. Most viewers only stick around for a single dose.

    1. which is why it’s such a cash cow (not that cash cow…), because there’s a different set of 200,000 or so eyeballs on it every half hour for advertisers to target, so the total audience across the 3+ plus hours is likely 4 or 5 times that amount.

      1. The final live 5 city metro rating for both was 192,000 each so Today never won. That’s according to the 1pm total tv release. It was a draw at best

  5. Didn’t the Today show producer come out and say that metro numbers are antiquated and that it’s all about VOZ? If that’s the case they still lost.

        1. As a regional viewer I say national to reflect an accurate inclusive Australian rating figures. Great that you asked the question 10 years ago David, maybe time to ask it again? Would like to think the networks may of progressed in their thinking.
