The Bushwackers compete on The Voice

Coach Jessia Mauboy reunites with folk band who helped her win a Tamworth music contest 20 years ago.

The Voice coach Jessica Mauboy reunited with members of The Bushwackers last night when the famed folk group took to the stage as 2023 contestants.

Mauboy was a teenager when she appeared on stage at a Tamworth music festival without accompanying musicians two decades ago. It was The Bushwackers which provided musical support for her performance, which would win a talent quest.

“I can’t believe this is happening, it’s a full circle of my life,” she said.

The Bushwhackers, founded at La Trobe University in Melbourne in 1971, last night performed the iconic I Am Australian – a song that singer Dobe Newtown co-wrote with Bruce Woodley.

The duo turned four chairs before choosing Team Jess for a little reverse-mentoring.

    1. The block is interesting. Earlier this season, Guy said he was often reluctant to use the block as he would feel bad for the contestant / doing them a disservice. That said, he used it against Rita last night (it was a 4 chair turn so I guess the contestant still had a decent choice).

  1. Was a great tv moment and segment, but I am unsure about whether The Bushwackers should be eligible to compete. Iconic band, but is it fair to have such seasoned performers/writers against raw young talent?

      1. Sure, but it doesn’t make it fair. Having watched every season, I don’t recall an act as successful and with such a long career having got to the next round as The Bushwackers.

          1. Yes, but not quite the same thing 🙂 Although that was a tad iffy. There was a Golden Guitar winner a few seasons back who made it to nearly the end, and I remember whinging about it then. I recall Shauna Jensen auditioning in season 1 i think and she didn’t get a chair turn. I messaged her as she is an awesome session vocalist, but also thought that someone with a record deal behind them already and a long career should not be included. Guy’s one time duet partner Tarryn Stokes is looking like another case of it this year. But her narrative seems to have won people over, and she wasn’t a recording artist in her own right, but where is the line? 🙂

    1. The Bushwhackers…..You cannot do better than an oldie(s) …but a bloody goodie….these guys are great and deserve to be on the show…just like everyone else…in my humble true blue Aussie opinion…and why not I say…as for seasoned or raw talent…that comes down to a matter of personal opinion.

      1. Agree and along with about 5 other songs haha that should definitely be our National Anthem. I actually shed a tear and I’m not very patriotic but gee that song and them are amazing! Too bad they’ll be out in the first round
