“It might have been the street demolished and rebuilt somewhere else.”

Neighbours was already thinking of other ways to come back if it wasn't able to secure its beloved Ramsay Street.

What would Neighbours have done if Pin Oak Court -aka Ramsay Street- was not available for the revival?

That’s a question I posed to exec producer Jason Herbison who credits Amazon with being open to the possibility that they may not have been able to secure the famed streetscape.

“They were very understanding and said, ‘Alright, well, what would you do if you don’t?’ he tells TV Tonight.

“Fortunately, we do have the street so I didn’t have to go down the track too much of what we would have done. It would have been a different return story. It possibly wouldn’t have involved the return of so many characters.

“I think it might have been perhaps one or two households moving to a new street. I don’t know. It might have been the street demolished and rebuilt somewhere else.

“All of those scenarios I was prepared to venture down. But I didn’t need to.

But look, I’m a storyteller. I think anything’s possible.

“If we had to move the street somewhere else that’s a great story to tell. I’m not sure what we would have told because we didn’t end up having to do that. But I would have embraced that as a great challenge.”

  1. Or if they don’t want to mess with The Project at 6:30 pm run Neighbors at 6pm on the main channel, that would work well for people who have already watched the News on 10 or aren’t interested in watching News on 7 or 9.

  2. Network 10 haven’t promoted that it’s on Peach at 6:30pm much, but I stumbled across it. I think 4:30pm most people are at work or busy with kids = tough slot. Bold did well there because it’s an older audience. I get 10 want to boost news, but I personally think it should be on 10 main channel at 6:30pm and The Project runs for 30 minutes at 7pm. It’s a waste of space running it at 4:30 on the main channel. I noticed Peach are still running Neighbors later into the Home and Away slot till about 7:04 pm, this is annoying and it’s the same audience watching both shows, so you are just annoying them by missing the end of one and the start to the other. Come on programming department listen and learn from past experiences.

  3. I did love in the first ep back, the homage it paid to the first ep on Seven. Where the family stopped in their car into Ramsay street in the opener was the same place the character from Seven was bouncing the ball. I thought that was really nice to see

  4. If they had no “Ramsay Street”, the comeback would not have worked. Think the A Country Practice revival on Channel 10, where all of a sudden Wandin Valley after being in NSW for 12 years was now in a much greener VIC, and that was after they had a bush fire. And then there’s Seachange, which was originally a VIC coastal town before becoming a NSW town in the 9 revival. The street has been the one constant in the shows 28 years. In its first year on 7, the local shops and streets were filmed in the South Melbourne/Albert Park area. But when they moved to ten the localities changed to more south eastern Melbourne where “Ramsay Street” actually was.

      1. Yes, that’s why I said “Ramsay street” was the one constant. The street was Pin Oak Court, but other outdoor local scenes were mostly in Sth Melb area for the first year. Even in the end credits they showed houses, a lot of them looked familiar to me, having family that lived in Albert Park and Port Melbourne.

  5. I noticed archival footage and clever angles made sure we didn’t see number 22 in the new episodes since they ripped out their entire front yard and started renovations. It’s been almost a year and they still haven’t started landscaping the front yard based on what I’ve seen online from fan visits to the street.

      1. Sure, I found them on instagram by searching #ramsaystreet. Might be hard to find them quickly as instagram has changed their algorithms when searching in hashtags.
Every single tree, plant, retaining wall, and rock has been removed, as well as the grass. The balcony has been painted black. A whopping fence has been installed between #22 and #24, as well as plantation shutters in all the windows. Additionally the houses to the left of #22 towards the entry of the street has ripped out many trees and shrubs.

  6. Doesn’t sound like he was confident in Amazon fundi g a replica on a backlot then. Indeed in many ways surprising that wasn’t done years ago – quite common for long running dramas to begin filming on location then switch to a purpose built replica once it’s deemed a worthy investment.

    1. Apparently a number of years ago when the Nunawading studios were at risk of closing down, there were “plans” to build a street in Docklands and have all the filming there. But the studios got a reprieve.

I say “plans”, probably nothing more than conversations, but that was the back up if Nunawading went.
