Mary Gearin quits ABC News

"It's time for me to explore other adventures" says Victorian news presenter after some 3 decades with public broadcaster.

ABC News presenter Mary Gearin has announced her departure after some three decades, off and on, with the broadcaster.

The presenter and senior reporter has served as the ABC’s national sport correspondent, Europe correspondent, co-hosted News Breakfast and spent 10 years working as a long-form specialist for 7.30 program.

She currently presents ABC News Victoria bulletin on Friday and Saturdays.

‘I have loved every challenging, crazy, privileged moment of working for the ABC,’ Gearin wrote.

“I specifically want to thank the audience – I’ve developed a profound sense of connection with you and for that I’m very grateful. I’m honoured to have met people from so many walks of life, across the world, and told their stories.

“It’s been a rich and stimulating stint working alongside some of the best humans on the planet,” she noted.

“It’s time for me to explore other adventures, but I leave knowing ABC’s future lies safe in the hand of its critical-thinking workers, never compromising their values.”

Gearin was ABC’s first National Sport Correspondent, breaking stories on Tennis Australia dragging the chain on protecting young players from child abuse, led coverage including the ball-tampering affair, the ruckus at the top of the Australian Olympic Committee, the fall out between the AOC and the Sports Commission and the cricket pay dispute.

In the London bureau, Mary led the ABC’s coverage of major breaking world news events, such as the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks, the Germanwings disaster, Greece’s 2015 elections and financial crisis, and Europe’s migrant crisis.

She’s covered four Olympics, two Commonwealth Games, a Rugby World Cup, the election of a new Pope and the birth of Prince George.

Her final bulletin will be Saturday night on ABC Victoria.
