Friday Flashback: Pictures of You: Cal Wilson

In 2012, Cal Wilson told Brian Nankervis about her earliest performance pursuits, followed by the horrors of a school formal.

Cal Wilson featured on so many local comedy shows and panels there were many choices I could have used for this week’s flashback: Good News Week, Spicks and Specks, Thank God You’re Here, Kitty is not a Cat and more.

In 2012 she featured on Working Dog’s Pictures of You, a conversation show in which the engaging Brian Nankervis would present his subjects with photographs from their past. It was a simple premise but one that gently shed insight into their character.

In this scene, Cal recalls her early performance pursuits doing Theatresports in New Zealand, before the horrors of a school formal.

Thanks for the laughs, Cal.

  1. I must admit that I don’t watch a lot of stand up comedy or the plethora of game shows that have comedic talent on board. Comedy, for me, is so personal, you either like that style or not. I saw a bit of Cal and I have no strong memories of her routine.

However, listening to the tribute on “Stop Everything” (Radio National) yesterday I wish I had paid more attention. It was such a touching tribute. But the point they made that really suck with me was the public tributes that came out were from such a wide diversity of people, not just comedians, but from people well outside the “arts” industry who had some personal interaction with her and they were all saying the same thing – that she had a generosity of soul. A good person who wanted to make a serious point, but not through putting someone down and she wanted people to leave feeling a bit better about themselves. A good indicator a of life well lived.

Commiserations to her family and her undoubted thousands of true friends.
