Taylor Tomlinson named new US late night host

Comedian Taylor Tomlinson becomes the only female late-night US host and the youngest by more than 20 years.

CBS recently announced US comedian Taylor Tomlinson as its new late-night host -the only female late-night host and the youngest by more than 20 years.

After Midnight will air next year after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Tomlinson, 29, has gained prominence from two Netflix stand-up specials – Quarter Life Crisis and Look at You.

She joins the likes of NBC’s Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Kimmel at ABC on the late-night circuit and fills the slot left by Corden on The Late Late Show earlier this year.

Tomlinson has gained popularity on social media, particularly TikTok but was also a finalist on Last Comic Standing in 2015 and was named as one of the top 10 comics to watch by Variety, after appearing at the Just for Laughs festival in 2019.

The format of her new show, After Midnight, will be based on Comedy Central’s @midnight With Chris Hardwick, which ran from 2013-2017 and featured a panel of comics. Colbert announced After Midnight would be broadcast next year on his show on Wednesday, saying “We’ll need someone who is, I don’t know, fun, likeable, young, in touch with online trends and available every night of the week.”

  1. Is there any news on if Ten (or one of their fruit or font type named channels) will air this? It starts next week in the US, but I can’t see it in the TV guides for next week

  2. Could be interesting if it is designed to have broad appeal.

Like below wasn’t a fan Corden and missed Craig Ferguson as well, still watch a lot on YouTube to be honest, even in repeats it is vert enjoyable. Though like another comment, I long ago came to the conclusion that these shows are generational, what appealed to me probably doesn’t to the generation watching now. As let’s face it these shows are Late Night USA and the after midnight ones are for the viewers of a certain age and made to appeal to them, as I’m now not the age group sitting up at Midnight watching. Sam goes for Jimmy Fallon, no appeal to me what so ever, but probably does to that USA audience that grew up with him on Saturday Night Live and that style of comedy, it’s like my parents parents couldn’t see what my parents saw in Graham Kennedy.

  3. A Little Late with Lilly Singh… or Chelsea Handler… or what’s her face the other comedian? They all had late night shows… why can’t networks just keep them on air?

    1. No-cancelled. The costs of making it vs the available audience that late in the US made it unviable-Corden’s version was much more elaborate than Craig F’s.

  4. Why has this story suddenly become news today?

This interview and announcement aired over a week ago on Stephen Colbert on Channel 10.

  5. I gave Corden a go, but he didn’t hold a candle to Craig Ferguson. Both Ferguson and Letterman are sorely missed.

I’ll check out this new After Midnight show, but if it is mainly US politics (like Colbert), I won’t watch for long.
