Drew Mitchell lodges Fair Work Commission case against Stan Sport

Former Wallabies star alleges contraventions of workplace law after his contract was not renwed for 2024.

Stan Sport rugby union commentator and former Wallabies star Drew Mitchell is taking legal action against the Nine-owned streaming service after he was told his contract would not be renewed for next year.

Mitchell has lodged a case with the Fair Work Commission alleging contraventions of workplace law.

The Australian Financial Review reports while details of the dispute are not publicly available, Mitchell appeared at a mediation alongside Stan Sport boss Ben Kimber on Wednesday.

Mitchell, who joined Stan in 2021, was a critic of the campaign led by former Australian coach Eddie Jones, who resigned following revelations he was considering terminating his five-year contract and taking up a head coach role in Japan.

Despite the move, Mitchell will still appear as a commentator on Nine for the Paris 2024 Olympics given he has a different contract with Stan.

Stan declined to comment.

  1. I enjoy watching rugby but don’t watch that much of Stan’s podcasts like ‘The Good, The Bad and the Rugby’, these somewhat casual chat shows about rugby do get a bit frivolous on occasion, like having a few beers in a pub, fortunately I didn’t see Drew’s expletive ridden comments regarding Eddie Jones, but most thinking rugby followers would have generally agree with Drew. Interestingly Drew isn’t alone with the offhand comments former All Black Justine Marshall was cut from the RWC commentary team by Sky Sports NZ boss Sophie Moloney, Marshall is known for speaking his mind and has apologised more than once for his critical remarks, Marshall managed to find an RWC gig with SuperSport in South Africa, so he ended up on the winning team in the end.
