The Chase repeats top entertainment in summer ratings week

No wonder competition is coming, even in repeats Seven's game show still draws a crowd.

Ahead of renewed competition this year, Seven’s afternoon game show was the top entertainment show of last week.

Repeats of The Chase averaged 444,000 metro viewers, just ahead of Darby & Joan on ABC at 435,000.

Seven won Week 6 of summer, claiming every night except Saturday, snatched by Nine. ABC defeated 10 from Tuesday – Saturday.

Unusually, Seven won Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. Nine claimed Melbourne and Brisbane.

…and is this a first? NITV landed ahead of ABC ME -both have limited viewership in OzTAM ratings given the timeslot and various audience spread across the country.

  1. The next couple of weeks will depend on how Alex De Minaur performs through the tournament. You would expect that Nine will dominate during the next 2 weeks thanks to the tennis. Meanwhile, Seven will struggle int he ratings due to a very weak Windies Test side coming to Australia. Sadly, the Windies are no longer a dominant force in Tests anymore. With matches expected to wrap up very early, Seven will lose a lot of money.

    1. There is concern about how commentators can affect the game by saying something, then it’s picked up and relayed to the coaches. You sometimes hear the favouritism in AFL commentary depending on where the teams are from or who the network wants to win.

  2. Watch the tables turn now that the Aus Open has started, bizarrely Nine and Seven’s summer-to-date main channel share spilt by just 0.1%, you’d expect Channel 9 will romp home now and that’s total people (key demographics even more so), amazing how two weeks of 2+ months can give you the whole non-survey period! However, there is Gladiators on 10 and some first run ABC shoss and unusually, there’s two cricket tests still to come against the AO (usually they’re in November) including a Gabba day/night, however very weak side in the Windies could see very one-sided and wrap days early and wet Queensland weather could see washouts.

  3. I think game show repeats need to be programmed or curated carefully. There are so many episodes of The Chase that it’s not easy to remember if you’ve seen a particular episode before, but you know it if you do and it’s a change of the channel to something fresher or more refreshed.

As for NITV, I thought it could be that ABC ME viewers were declining, though it’s a growth in NITV viewers if it’s going into 0.5. NITV also switch to HD recently. There are still a couple of channels or so having growth in audiences, so it’s still possible, even in the current industry to get an audience if the programming and content is good.

    1. The problem with the repeats is that they’re much too recent. I only started watching the show in the last year, and I’m recalling contestants (and questions) left and right (mostly from a few short months ago). Considering that the show is regularly demolishing the competition, maybe Seven would consider commissioning more episodes so that they can air new eps over the summer non-ratings period, but with repeats rating as well as they do, I can’t blame them for not bothering either.

      1. While annoying summer repeats are to be expected so cast and crew get a break. But there are far too many Chase repeats during the year. Probably the issue is Larry’s frenetic schedule with The Morning Show as well. With increased competition for The Chase surely this will have to change. Im sure I won’t be the only one whose remote will wander if there are too many repeats. Maybe Larry will step down from The Morning Show or move to a 3 to 4 day a week roster?

  4. Such a shame those ratings stats don’t tell the full story. Almost 25% of Home and Away’s live audience watches on 7plus now and that’s not reflected in the above data which makes the performance of H&A look like shit. I still believe even after streaming is taken into account ACA is still #1 but the gap between it and H&A is much narrower.

    1. That is interesting, I don’t check that information, but would reinforce why the drama is still important to 7. Let’s hope the new ratings data more accurately reflects this…
