“They absolutely don’t know they’re going to be picked”

New Deal or No Deal host Grant Denyer says contestants have no idea they are going to be chosen to play.

Rhiannon Maxwell, the first contestant on 10’s new Deal or No Deal, walked away with a $20,00 deal and plans to spend the winnings on a holiday, boat and tattoo.

According to host Grant Denyer, contestants summoned from the studio audience have no idea they are about to get called to play the game.

“Absolutely not. We haven’t cheated that at all. They are completely blind,” he told TV Tonight.

“You’ll see by the reactions because Australians aren’t great actors. They absolutely don’t know they’re going to be picked. Everyone that we’ve picked so far has had no idea.”

Having filmed around 70 episodes so far, Denyer says the 10 show will also be more playful with its incorporation of the Banker.

“Our banker occasionally will phone to the floor, and I’ll answer the phone. They want to pass messages on to the contestants. Sometimes it’s a little bit of healthy ridicule and sometimes it’s to stump up some demands. There’s a little bit of argy bargy that goes on between our contestant and our banker, which is a little bit of fun.”

Of the Deals offered to contestants he adds, “It’s not an algorithm that just presents a bank offers to our contestants. It’s more fluid than that, depending on how they’re going and how much they’re liked, and how much the contestant is willing to push the Banker.”

Deal or No Deal screens 6pm weeknights on 10.

  1. This is very nerdy motion graphics talk… but there were some low res on screen stuff last night. Infuriating. Also some great graphics on set that are barely in shot.

  2. I found the ‘Bali, Boats, Pies’ chant multiple time to be super cringe. I also thought that despite there being four fewer cases this felt a lot more manic and rushed than I remember the channel 7 version being.

    1. I was thinking might have to add more cases to pad the time out more, certainly didn’t seem rushed seemed like a lot of empty air time to fill with dancing and chanting etc, second episode seemed much better paced though.

  3. Whether or not she knew she’d be picked, they clearly targeted the most bogan contestant to appeal to Channel 10 demographics. The fact that there was a running theme of raising funds for a trip to Bali, a boat and a Collingwood tattoo really said it all.

    1. I haven’t watched this new version and probably won’t but I wish it went back to the original format which was a round of multiple choice questions to narrow it down to a block and then again to get the player.
I have a few family members that went to a taping towards the end when channel 7 had it and they said it was the most drawn out an painful thing they’ve had to sit through and they ended up standing up and walking out after seeing over a dozen others do the same thing within a couple of minutes. People from the production weren’t happy with them all and that’s understandable because of the issues it causes in filming but apparently it was so bad that people were really uncomfortable and upset with how long it went on for and the way that they were treated during the short breaks intervals they got.

  4. I saw the last 10 mins of the first ep of DOND. They had 22 cases with max value of $100K. The music was refreshed and so was the font. However I wonder whether they had an intro VO guy? (When I watched 7’s DOND from 2004, they had an intro VO guy that voiced the brieefcases).

  5. anh do would have been a better host. or celia paquola from thank god ur here i hope they replace grant with someone else. its possible they could right…?

  6. Managed to watch four of the new shows yesterday (three live – two in part and one on demand), enjoyed them all (Tipping Point, Chase doubles, Deal and Aus Idol auditions), but probably liked Deal the most, just because it was nostalgic, short, tight, fun and easy viewing (even if it’s very fresh from the old). Nice to see a contestant from my very backyard too 🙂

  7. The format isn’t one you could really stuff up the execution of, but nothing surprises me with 10.
However, first episode was fine. (Minus the dancing).

Also the lower $250 for correct guess was a bit stingy, but doesn’t take away from the show.

    1. I think that’s my main issue with the show – I enjoyed it well enough but the prizes were lower than 7’s daily version (which had a $200,000 top prize and I think it was $1,000 for a guess (with occasional “Mega-Guesses” for more than that).

I enjoyed it well enough so I’ll stick with it as a news alternative, but there’s a few loose screws to be tighten to make it a better show.

  8. It was the worst reboot I’ve ever seen. When is 10 going to realise that everyone finds Grant Denyer annoying, overrated and overexposed. And this version of Deal is just cheap: Less cases, money and not even a car to giveaway.
