Ita Buttrose farewell cancelled

Will Ita get to bow out with a formal farewell, or sail off into the sunset?

A farewell for outgoing ABC Chair Ita Buttrose due to take place last week has been postponed, and potentially may not take place at all.

Guardian Australia reported her long-planned farewell event, a four-hour cocktail function with invited guests, was postponed earlier in the month after invitations had gone out. The note said it had been postponed “due to unexpected circumstances”.

It suggests the recent bad press due to Antoinette Lattouf’s Fair Work claim ‘is likely to have scared the horses’ but another date is planned.

But the Sydney Morning Herald claims the soiree at ABC’s Studio 22 has now been cancelled.

Buttrose also scrapped plans for any media in the lead-up to her departure, with no “exit interview” pieces on the cards any more.

The appointment of Kim Williams as chair has been signed off by the governor-general and he will take up the role after Buttrose exits on March 6.

  1. For the average worker, a farewell means visiting the local pub and paying for what you have.

For current ABC management, a farewell is a taxpayer funded affair with premium liquor.

Half the country have never had a cocktail, because they are so expensive.

(Naturally the Q + A high horses will never discuss this topic)
