TVNZ Midday signs off, barefoot exit.

After her final bulletin a NZ anchor walked barefoot out of a studio, wheeling a suitcase behind her.

TVNZ Midday anchor Indira Stewart farewelled viewers and signed off yesterday, walking barefoot out of the studio wheeling a suitcase behind her.

“From all the reporters, presenters, camera operators, editors, graphic designers, deskies, soundies, directors, autocue operators and producers who have helped make the midday news over the years, it’s been a privilege to present Midday to you all, we want to thank you for watching,” she said before leaving the desk.

“Take care, mou me’a a.”

Crew could then be seen mopping the floor as the lights went out.

It follows the state broadcaster’s decision to also end the broadcast of Fair Go, Sunday, and Tonight.

TVNZ is cutting 68 jobs from a staff of around 700 after posting an operating loss of NZ$4.6 million (A$4.29 million) for the second half of 2023.

TVNZ chief executive Jodi O’Donnell has said, “I want to acknowledge again the significant value and contribution that these shows have made over many years.

“While these decisions are incredibly difficult, we must bring our costs more in line with our revenue and get our business in shape for a digital-first world.”

US entertainment giant Warner Bros Discovery also plans to shutter New Zealand outlet Newshub in June, with a reported loss of about 300 jobs.

  1. I don’t get it. If it’s the state broadcaster, why does it matter if it’s operating at a loss? I would hate to see the operating loss for the ABC.

  2. Oh dear, will be sadly missed in the Pacific.
Cook Islands, Samoa, Niue, Solomon Islands, Fiji, etc. Looks like a bit more of ABC Australia or Al Jazeera.
