Airdate: Robert De Niro: Hiding In The Spotlight

He's played big mobsters, petty thugs, jealous and angry men, but this doco reveals the sensitivity of a man and an artist.

One for movie buffs next week…

Doco special Robert De Niro: Hiding In The Spotlight, made entirely from excerpts from De Niro’s films and archives, reveals the sensitivity of a man and an artist, beyond words.

He played big mobsters, petty thugs, jealous and angry men, guys whose emotions are too restrained and end up gushing out too brutally. In artistic partnership with Martin Scorsese, Robert de Niro has written an essential page in the cinema of the last fifty years. He gave his anti-hero characters a humanity, a gentleness. It’s as if by constantly transforming himself and exposing himself in front of the camera of the greatest filmmakers, he managed to hide himself better.

Who is this actor who has long sought to flee from the press and make himself inaccessible? What if, behind the mask of his characters, Robert De Niro had revealed a small part of himself, and ended up embodying all the instinctive violence of America?
