Airdate: ABBA and the Secrets of Swedish Pop / Rock Legends: ABBA

Two premiere specials mark the 50th anniversary of ABBA winning Eurovision in 1974.

To mark 50 years since ABBA won Eurovision, SBS will next week screen two premiere specials, ABBA and the Secrets of Swedish Pop and Rock Legends: ABBA.

ABBA and the Secrets of Swedish Pop
Thursday, 9 May at 7.30pm on SBS
50 years ago Swedish pop supergroup ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest with their breakthrough hit Waterloo. It was the ‘big bang’ moment when ABBA and Swedish pop music exploded into the wider world’s consciousness.

From ABBA to Europe, Max Martin to Roxette, Ace of Base to Robyn and beyond, for decades Swedish artists, writers and producers have had an enormous impact on the charts worldwide. Told through archive footage, unique infographics and interviews with songwriters, producers, performers and industry experts including Ulf Ekberg (Ace of Base), Dr Alban, Nina Persson (The Cardigans), John Grant, E-Type, Jacob Collier and Benjamin Ingrosso, this special reveals the secrets of ABBA’s global success and the rise of the Swedish smash hit factory, examining how this most musical of nations – just the size of California – came to rule the world of pop.

Rock Legends: ABBA
Saturday, 11 May at 10.00pm on SBS
Abba are one of Sweden’s biggest exports and the world’s biggest pop act. However, the pop music that will be remembered for generations to come grew out of a very different sound.

We are yet to see a broadcast for ABBA: Against The Odds which sees a host of European broadcasters including BBC, ARD/WDR, France Télévisions, SVT and DR unite and come together to fund a special 50th feature film.

  1. All Channel 7 jokes aside, the ABBA and the Secrets of Swedish Pop one looks like it is going to be a very interesting doco judging from the description!

Also, please note that a few weeks ago, SBS Viceland aired “Take A Chance”, a very sensationalised documentary about Agnetha’s stalker that actually made headlines in Sweden when it aired on Prime Video there.
